19 Lessons I've Learned By 19

How exciting and terrifying growing up proves to be.

Nineteen feels strange; I’ve moved past the wonder of eighteen, and twenty is just one year away.

At nineteen, I’m stuck.

I’ve learned some lessons though, good and bad:

  1. Forgiving is difficult. But you must forgive. Allow yourself to let go of the anger towards those who have hurt you, and most importantly, make peace with your mistakes. Forgiving yourself often proves to be the most difficult of tasks.
  2. You will find your people; do not change yourself when doing so.
  3. Excitement and happiness are to be found in doing the things you love. Do not let others discourage you.
  4. If you feel afraid of getting attached to someone, keep him/her close. It may hurt if he/she falls through, but you tried. And trying is better than having done nothing.
  5. You may feel lonely in college; in fact, you’ll definitely feel lonely at times. And that is okay.
  6. Art is powerful, and it will always be at your disposal.
  7. Radiate confidence.
  8. Apply to everything. The more applications you submit, the better your chances of being accepted to something. A brilliant woman always tells me this...thanks, Mom.
  9. If surrounded by the right people, you won’t feel the need to drink in order to enjoy yourself.
  10. Although fictional, Brooke Davis can most certainly be your inspiration.
  11. Listen attentively and often to those you love. Listen to strangers, too. They all have some crazy, exciting, heartbreaking, and inspiring stories to share.
  12. Oversized sweaters are always appropriate, even throughout the summer.
  13. Loving your body is so hard. I have struggled most days with accepting each and every part of it. I dance, laugh, write, and live in those parts, however, and for that, I cannot love them enough.
  14. Keep in touch; people miss you more than you believe, and I’m sure you reciprocate the same.
  15. Do not be afraid of saying no. Take time in learning to loudly, clearly, and unapologetically decline the people and things that do not serve you well.
  16. Time may scare you. It scares me, too. Rather than working against it, remind yourself of its ticking, and live each second, passionately.
  17. Freshly baked cupcakes are to be cherished.
  18. Push yourself, but do not be so strenuous.
  19. The decisions you have made thus far will affect parts of your future, but they will in no way define it. Never feel as if you cannot start over; nineteen truly is just the beginning.

Christmas Tree
History.com

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
