18: A Year In Review

Goodbye 18, Hello 19

In less than two weeks, I will be saying goodbye to my 18th year and hello to my 19th. I’m not going to lie and say 18 was a pretty chill year, because it wasn’t. It was hands down one of the most exciting years of my life. Let’s take a look at my year and all the things that happened.

I started my eighteenth year off at the casino with my best friend and my family. What better way to celebrate turning 18 than gambling, right?! My first time at the casino turned out to be amazing. I ended up winning $320 on a slot machine and called it good for the day. Turning 18 must also mean that you become smarter and know when to stop yourself from blowing your money. That night I went to bed and woke up the next day with all my friends in my house for a surprise-birthday-breakfast-party. Two of my favorite things-- my friends and breakfast food. What a dream.

Moving on to a couple months into year 18, my sister moved away to California. This one was a struggle for me. Having your big sister live over 2,300 miles away from you is a hard thing. However, you learn to appreciate your bond more and most importantly appreciate the time you spent together. To make matters more interesting, less than 24 hours after she left, it was time for me to peace out and move into my dorm at Michigan State. This was the start of the most amazing part of my eighteenth year. I lived in a room with three other girls who truly made the year memorable. I got a job on campus, had a huge epiphany and changed my major halfway through the year, passed all my classes (thank God!), and made some amazing friends along the way. Looking back at it, I couldn’t imagine my life without Michigan State and all the joy it brought me.

In addition to college, I got to spend some time traveling outside of Michigan. I took a couple trips to California, quite a few trips to New Jersey, and a super fun trip to Illinois to hang out with two of my best friends from school.

It’s now reaching the end of year 18, and I’m spending a lot of it working and a lot of it enjoying my summer. In a couple weeks I will be ending this awesome year on the beach in New Jersey-- my favorite place.

Year 18 was a good one, but I’m so ready for year 19 and whatever comes with it. I’ve learned a lot about myself and the world, but there’s so much more to look forward to-- more moments and memories that I cannot wait to come. Bring it on.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
