J. Cole's new album came out about a week ago and it's all I've been listening too. This could possibly be one of his best albums, but I say that about all his albums when they come out. J. Cole's "4 Your Eyez Only" album is from a perspective of another person, but it also has some of his perspective. There are a lot of lyrics in this album that speak the truth but here are a few that stick out the most.
1. "But what do you do when there's no place to turn?"
This rhetorical question holds a lot of meaning. He is questioning what he is supposed to do since his life is falling apart with nowhere to go and no one to turn too.
2. "Got nowhere to go, put away my pride. Tired of feeling low even when I'm high. Ain't no way to live, do I wanna die? I don't know, I don't know."
Since he doesn’t have anyone, he feels lonely and like no one cares about him. He doesn’t know what to do. He’s really confused about his life and he’s hurt. He feels like he wants to die but he doesn't know if he wants to one hundred percent.
3. "Have you ever served a fiend with a pocket full of soap?"
A fiend is an evil spirit so he’s referencing the devil and he's talking about how he wants to wash away his sins but the fiend won’t let him.
4. "To die a young legend or live a long life unfulfilled 'cause you wanna change the world, but while alive you never will 'cause they only feel you after you gone, or I've been told."
What J. Cole is saying here is that when legends die, people are able to realize what they stood for but when they were alive no one saw their full potential.
5. "Every saint got a past, every sinner got a future, every loser gotta win, and every winner gotta lose someday."
This is one of my favorite verses out of the whole album because he’s basically saying that no one is perfect and no one wins all the time. If a person acts like a saint doesn't mean they haven't sinned.
6. "Give up my chain, never give up my pride, never show 'em pain, never dirt on my name, never."
He’s not going to let people get under his skin.
7. "I wanna talk about my days as a youth to you exposing you to all my demons and the reasons I'm this way."
He wants to tell his significant other everything about him; the good and the bad. Everyone wants someone like this, someone to tell their feelings too without being judged for it.
8. "My fears alleviate, my tears evaporate, my faith don't deviate, ideas don't have a date, but see I'm growing and getting stronger with every breath."
He’s meditating and letting his emotions go and he's finding peace with himself and his past and he is embracing the future.
9. "See I believe if God is real, He'll never judge a man because He knows us all and therefore He would understand."
He’s asking God for forgiveness of his sins and then he’s like well if everything is true about God than he should be able to forgive me and not judge me because he knows us better than we know ourselves.
10. "But the only real change come from inside."
If you want to change, you have to change your thoughts and attitude towards things to change on the outside.
11. "Life is all about the evolution."
Life is about changing and becoming a better person and moving forward from your mistakes.
12. "Time is short that's what somebody told me, too short to keep following your homies."
You can’t waste your life following what your friends are doing. If you want to do something, then do it yourself because life's too short to wait for other people.
13. "We the ones that got to wear our face backwards, put your frown on before they think you soft, never smile long or take your defense off."
We have to wear a mask so we don’t show that we have a soft side. We can’t show people that we are happy because they might use that against us.
14. "It seems my dreams faded for far too long, the consequences deadly."
When you don’t follow your dreams they seem to go away and you end up doing something else that you don’t want to do. Because of this, you end up dying on the inside because that wasn't your aspiration in life.
15. "I'm living fast, but not fast enough cause karma keeps on catching up to me."
He’s living life to the fullest but karma is catching up with him because some of the things that he has done in his life weren't right.
16. "Sometimes I think this segregation would've done us better."
Even though segregation has ended, it is still here because of racism.
In my opinion, J. Cole is one of the best rappers because he talks about things that mean something to him and he doesn't hold anything back.
