When I go home during breaks from school, I rarely actually take breaks and instead find myself working in one or more retail positions. I do not mind either of my jobs and I am grateful to be employed, however too much of anything can have its downfall. After so many consecutive 8+ hour days one can get a little lost in their mind so here are some situations that I have dealt with that I am sure others have as well.
1. When you ask "Is there anything I can help you find?" but know that there is a chance you may not have the answer.
While working in the aisles it is common for people to look to you for guidance and as much as you want to help them, sometimes you might not know the answer to where something is.
2. When you ask a qualifying question to a customer and they ignore you.
It's bad enough being stuck behind a register, but it's even worse when you are ignored by the only person you have to talk to.
3. When you work really hard to find something for a customer, but they get impatient and leave
The places I work have really high standards for their employees so it's common for an employee to go out of their way to help an individual customer. However, once in a while, a customer will give up on you.
4. When you are helping someone who you find super attractive and you get irrationally nervous
We all have that beautiful stranger who we are secretly in love with from a distance, but would never admit it to their face...am I right?
5. When you are ringing someone out and they mention that they are in a hurry.
There are few things worse than being rushed in an environment where you are already under so much pressure.
6. When the people in your line are arguing and you just want to announce the total.
When a mom is yelling at her child or two significant others are bickering in your line, you can feel pretty helpless.
7. When you are finished ringing out items and your customer disappeared to grab one more item
It's weird to finish ringing up someone's items when they aren't there, especially if someone else is in line behind them.
8. When you're on your lunch break and realize you have to go back.
Sometimes coming back to work after a break just makes you feel like you're beginning your shift all over again.
9. When your customer is talking on their phone and treats you like you're rude when you need to ask questions to best serve them.
It just doesn't seem right that you can be asking someone questions to help make their life easier only to be treated like you're an awful person.
10. When the 77th person asks "Working hard or hardly working"?
It's not the worst thing in the world, but we hear it way too much over the course of our shifts.
11. When you got stuck working a turn around shift and a customer exclaims "Wake up!"after you yawn
Maybe this is just a personal pet peeve, but I get really upset when people I don't know tell me to wake up. Sometimes I'm legitimately exhausted, so just let me yawn in peace, okay?
12. When you take the heat for your company not carrying a certain product.
It's not easy being the messenger, especially in situations out of your control.
13. When an ex you haven't seen in a while is shopping at your place of employment.
This situation can vary a lot depending on how the relationship ended, if they are with a new significant other, etc.
14. When you've worked too many days in a row.
It's easy to commit to so many shifts in advance, but once the 7th day in a row hits, it can hit you hard.
15. When you shut your light off, but someone with a cart full turns into your line anyway.
After a full shift, nothing feels worse than thinking you're serving your last customer just to find out you're actually serving your "second- to- last" customer.
16. When you make an easy human mistake and are willing to fix it, but you get yelled at anyway.
For some reason there are people think that retail employees shouldn't be allowed to make mistakes, but unfortunately that's not how it works.
17. When a customer decides half way through the order that they want paper bags instead of plastic bags.
This can be applied to anything that makes you have to redo your work entirely, it's unsettling to say the least.
18. When you leave after staying later than expected.
While being asked to stay later can be a drag, if you survive, you will probably have the best sleep ever.
