Don't Underestimate the Little Things

18 Things To Appreciate In Life
Lauren Elicker

In a world where there seems to be tragedy after tragedy, I want to bring something positive in it today. The cliche saying, "appreciate the little things," can be true. The little stuff you usually pass by and think of as normal can be amazing once you think about them. Although there are many things that you can appreciate about this life, here are some that keep me going. No matter how hard times get, I can count on at least one thing to make this world beautiful.

1. The Sunrise and The Sunset

Take the time to wake up early and actually watch and take in the beauty of the sunrise. Yeah, it happens everyday, but the feeling of peace you get seeing something so beautiful is a feeling that you can never grow tired of.

2. The Rain

Even if the rain can be a nuisance, there is a beauty in the rain and the smell after it rains.

3. Adventure

Never pass up an opportunity to adventure. Life itself is an adventure, and whenever you get the chance, adventure often. There are amazing things on the other side of adventures, never cease to look for them.

4. Spontaneity

A little bit of spontaneity is good for the soul. The feeling of an impulse buy, or the feeling of a spontaneous day trip to the beach, can be great; never be afraid of being spontaneous, it can lead you to beautiful destinations.

5. Nice People

Every time I hear stories of people helping other strangers for no reason it gives me a warm feeling. When I was driving home from the beach once, I was on the turnpike, I was upset because I accidentally went through the EZ Pass lane when I shouldn't have, and so I pulled up to give the toll both guy my money, and he says, "You're good, the car in front paid for you." I got such a warm feeling in my heart and all I could do was smile. Humanity is such an amazing and powerful thing, and it's always amazing to experience it.

6. Diners

You can never underestimate a diner. Diners usually (emphasis on usually, I've only had one bad experience at a diner) have amazing food, friendly people, and there's always the amazingly bitter diner coffee that you just can't refuse. Diners are beautiful in so many ways, and I've learned to appreciate every one I've been to.

7. Tiny Humans

We all know we've heard at least one quote from a tiny human that just made you wonder. The other day a I overheard a kid tell her friend, "My cousins hamster died... now he's in a container in the fridge." Oh what comes out of the mouths of babes.

8. Giving Back

Whether you've just witnessed it or participated, giving back has an energy that is unforgettable. I believe my destiny is to help people, and I will do so in any way possible, giving back is just one but it is so powerful.

9. A Good Cup of Coffee (Or Anything)

Bonus if it's in a cute mug! But come on who doesn't love a good cup of their fave drink?

10. A Good Book

There's something about getting lost in a world that's not your own. Sitting down with a good book is always a good idea.

"A room without a book is like a body without a soul"

11. Naps

I don't think this needs an explanation as to why it should be appreciated.

12. Indulging

Appreciate life enough to treat your self. You deserve it!

13. Nature

There are an abundant of beautiful things to appreciate outside your window. Go outside, appreciate the trees, the birds, the sky.

14. Animals

Animals are too good for us not to appreciate.

15. First Time Experiences

First Time experiences have a way of teaching us some of the most valuable lessons. Never take a first timer for granted.

16. Friends And Family

As cliché as this is, life is short. You never know what card you'll be dealt next. Take life as it comes at you and love your people the most in any way you can.

17. Your Story

Everyone has a story, and everyone's story deserves to be appreciated. Your story has power to inspire others, don't forget that.

18. This Cliché List of Things to Appreciate

As cliche as this list is, appreciate it and let it remind you of the the little things in life that are amazing.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
