18 Things You Say When You Live In A Quint

Things My Roommates and I Have Said Over the Past Two Months

18 Things You Say When You Live In A Quint

With the help of my roommates, I came up with these 18 things that you say when you live in a quint:

Is this my hair?

Living in the quint at the end of a hall of suites, we have our own bathroom that gets cleaned weekly (we got lucky.) One of the things about having a bathroom with five girls is that there is always hair in the drain or on the wall of the shower. Every time you shower, you think, "is that my hair? Or is that one of their hairs?"

Who's going to fill the Brita?

Living in a quint, we have two sinks. One in the hallway part of the room when you first walk in, and one in the bathroom. We have had some issues lately with the water being brown, so we all sort of rely on the Brita.

Who left the Brita in the sink?

When filling the Brita, we have forgotten about it. Yes, we have five memories in the room, so you'd think at least one of us would remember. But we are five girls who are doing other things. Let's be honest, who hasn't left the Brita in the sink before? Once one of us accidentally filled it with hot water.

What's that smell?

More often than not, someone is making something in the microwave and one of us will say "What is that smell? Smells like..." Whether it be popcorn or frozen vegetables, the room always smells like something.

Who is this? (looks on Facebook)

We will just be talking and someone will come up and one of us won't know who this person is. We will pull up a picture on facebook or Instagram. "Oh you've probably seen him if you haven't met him," is often a sentence that comes out of one of our mouths.

Where you there when...?

When something funny happens, the story is often retold. Whether we were there or not, the story always starts with "were you there when... happened?" Often times one of us is not there, whether they are at the gym, at a discussion, or at dinner.

Where are you going?

I think this comes with any amount of roommates, but you want to know where your roommate is going, just to keep tabs on everyone.

Did you get dinner?

Every meal of the day except for breakfast on weekdays, we ask if the other had this meal or that meal. 80 percent of the time one or two other people haven't gotten lunch or dinner yet. If you get back from practice of a discussion late and everyone else has gone, you'll ask what it was or if there was anything good, even though we keep track of what is served on certain days of the week (can't wait for chicken nugget Friday!) No, being in a quint does not mean you automatically always have someone to eat every meals with. To be quite honest, rooming with four other girls, sometimes you want to be by yourself.

Who wants to get dinner?

Going off of the last one, if we are all here we will ask who wants to go to the caf and when. Although I mentioned that being in a quint does not mean you automatically have at least one person to eat every meal with, but it does mean you have someone to eat most meals with.

Who's at the door?

There is always someone here to looking for one of us. It's all the time, but often enough that it had to be added to the list. We all agreed on this one.

Are they at dinner?

I have come back from practice to an empty room, gone to dinner by myself, come back, and they still aren't back. They came back and said they stayed at dinner for an hour and a half because they didn't feel like leaving the caf.

Have you seen my I.D.?

This doesn't just go for out student I.D.'s, this goes for anything we can't find. The list ranges from I.D.'s to wallets to shirts. Not to mention that there were a few socks and shirts that have randomly popped into our room after doing laundry that were none of ours.

Crap! We're out of queso!

We all have that snack that we run out of at 10:30 while watching lip sync battles. For us, it's queso. That's when we will go to the mini mart to get some.

Let's make it cozy in here.

By this, we mean let's turn out all the big lights and turn the Christmas, pineapple, twinkly lights on.

Is Mel here?

The way our room is set up, when you first walk in, there is a big room with three beds, and a smaller alcove part with two. You cannot see one of the beds for a good few steps. That is my roommate Melanie's bed, so hence the question, "is Mel here?"

Can you tell the others I'm going home? I'll probably forget...

It's an unspoken rule that you have to tell your roommates you are going home for the weekend, but once in a while you'll forget who you told, or tell one to tell the others just in case you forget.

What time do you have class?

With the answer to this question, you can work around it when you guys want to eat lunch, if you guys are going to walk together if you have class in the same building, or who's going to shower first.

Who stole our marker?

Over Columbus Day Weekend, someone stole our marker, and we couldn't figure out who it was. It doesn't sound like such a bad thing, but it becomes a big deal when there are five of us in a room.

I wouldn't change being in a quint my freshman year for anything. When I tell people I live with four other girls in my room, they often say something like "oh wow! That's got to be rough!" I was a little nervous before everyone moved in, but I had nothing to worry about.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
