18 Songs You Need For Spring '18

It's a lot of alt, a little indie, and a dash of Cardi B.

Spring has finally sprung and while April showers bring May flowers, they also wash away all of the sad, angsty songs from your winter playlists. I'm not sure about you but I'm ready for some new music.

1. "Funhouse" by Run River North

When creating this playlist, I played this song about five times straight and knew that this was right for this spring. It's something you can play when you're starting your day, heading to class or working out.

2. "Pink Lemonade" by James Bay

"Pink Lemonade" has a beginning upbeat guitar riff, a catchy bridge, and a feel that makes you feel like you're already on a night out. But beware, "Pink Lemonade" is catchy enough where it might get stuck in your head.

3. "A Good Night" by John Legend

I love John Legend and not just because he's part of a power couple with Chrissy Teigen. His music always has this smooth element to it and "A Good Night" holds true to that.

4. "Standing On Ghosts" by Two Door Cinema Club

I love Two Door Cinema Club, so when I was browsing Spotify and spotted "Standing On Ghosts," I knew that it had to go on the playlist. It's has a slight different feel from their other songs (I think its because of the "Whoooo whoooo oh ah ah" during the chorus) but its got an energetic vibe.

5. "Endless Summer" by Grizfolk

"Endless Summer" is nice and folksy, adding a soft feel to Spring '18. Its fun, upbeat and gives you an indie feel without a sad subject. The song starts out slow, but then picks up to the point where it's easily a "sing along in the car" song.

6. "Want You Back" by 5 Seconds of Summer

When "college me" got that first email from 5SOS' listserv, it took me a few minutes to realize that it was a gift from "middle school me." I've had "Want You Back" stuck in my head since it released and tbh, I'm perfectly fine with it and ready for their new album.

7. "What's It Like Now" by Mikky Ekko

When I listen to "What's It Like Now," I feel like I'm instantly transported to a summer night, with neon lights and a drink in my hand. I may not actually be clubbing while listening to "What's It Like Now," but no one would know as I'm using my water bottle as a microphone and dancing in my room.

8. "Matchbox" by Rainbow Kitten Surprise

When I first listened to "Matchbox," I became very confused because there wasn't really a continuous plot within the song. After a few times of listening, I realized that it wasn't about what the song was saying and it was more about how I felt when I listened to it, which is calm and collected, like I'm starting my day.

9. "Lost In Paris" by Tom Misch ft. GoldLink

"Lost In Paris" makes me feel like I'm already on vacation instead of writing papers in the library. It provides a quick escape in a study break to think you're off exploring cities, grabbing a cocktail, or relaxing in the sun.

10. "Drama" (feat. Big Data) by NoMBe

In the song, NoMBe sings "ain't nothin' but drama" and sometimes you need a reminder that it's not a big deal.

11. "Lash Out" by Alice Merton

Alice Merton always has this empowering feel, where I feel like I can do anything and conquer the world. I hope "Lash Out" makes you feel the same way.

12. "Saturday Sun" by Vance Joy

Vance Joy always seems to put me in a good mood and "Saturday Sun" lives up to that feel. It's simple, upbeat, and I really hope someone sings about me the same way Vance Joy sings in this song.

13. "1950" by King Princess

"1950" feels like it could be on a Starbucks playlist, with its singer songwriter vibes. It's slow and smooth, which makes it a good transition song from winter to spring.

14. "Give It To Me Straight" by Micky James

I feel like any song that starts with "na na na na na na nananana" is going to have a strong beat and be easy to sing along to. "Give It To Me Straight" is definitely a "sing along in the car" song, especially it's one of the songs I sing when I'm cleaning.

15. "I Like It" by Cardi B

Sometimes you need a little Cardi B in your day. "I Like It" samples latin music, adding a little flair and energy to Cardi's rap. and is bound to be in your head all day.

16. "Everybody Wants To Be Famous" by Superorganism

I started listening to "Everybody Wants To Be Famous" when I was walking to class and feeling so on top of things for being early. It's become a daily thing, where I listen to "Everybody Wants To Be Famous" and immediately feel like a boss.

17. "Quite Some Time" by Alfred Hall

Alfred Hall has been one of my favorite artists for slow, background music since early high school and when I found "Quite Some Time," I knew that it had to be good. "Quite Some Time" still has Alfred Hall's typical slow feel and adds onto it with a solid beat and soft vocals, making it a good rainy day song.

18. "I Can't Quit" by The Vaccines

"I Can't Quit" is for when you're on the grind and you're so over it. I tend to play this when I'm midway through a paper to remind myself that I can't stop and that I have to finish it or when I'm waiting for my final class of the day to start and I just want to go home. Sometimes, I'm just over it.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
