All my life I've been a veteran of the public school system (minus that one year I went to some Christian Academy when I was four and have no memory of, so it doesn't count).
When it came to finding a college for myself, I wanted to find a place that had a similar worldview I had. I wanted to go to a school that was faith-based as a change of scenery, but I didn't want to go to a school where a specific religion was shoved down my throat.
By golly did I find the right school that I am proud to call home. However, the transition from a secular public school setting into a more religion-based school is an earth-shaking experience.
From my two months here, I have had some interesting observations that compare my public and private school experiences that I would like to share with you all.
1. The biggest party all week is Chapel
Church! Who knew it could be the biggest and most fun social gathering out there? And you never know who you will meet.
2. The biggest high you get is a spiritual one
4:20 'round here is life group, y'all.
3. Your professors may have a prayer time before an exam
"May you have mercy on those who studied hard for this exam... and for those who may have not."
4. There is no Greek life
However, there are clubs that may be a border-line Greek life.
5. Man buns and hipsters as far as the eye can see
Can someone say worship arts major?
6. You will walk into the coffee shop and about 85% of the time Disney music will be blaring
Nothing like getting up for those 7 a.m.'s and hearing "When Will My Life Begin" while waiting for your cup of joe.
7. Every weekend your school hosts some gnarly events
Come on, we all know that you're trying to keep us from going partying, but you do a heck of a good job throwing some lit events.
8. Snapchat stories are filled with typical Bible open, notebook, and coffee photos
We all know what I'm talking about and we all know you're guilty of it too.
9. There is never not a Bible study going on
10. Theological discussions are what you will eavesdrop on
It's never, "Did you hear what Kayla did at that rager party?". More like, "But if you look at Ezekiel 23:20 you will notice..."
11. There are no drug deals, just Bible deals
Bibles everywhere.
12. You're a heathen if you don't hold the door open
13. Everyone is respectful about visitation hours
And they never forget the 90-degree angle of the door.
14. It is not hard to find someone who is down for a Lord of the Rings marathon
... or any nerdy marathon to be honest.
15. Ring before spring is not a myth, but a lifestyle
16. Everyone has and loves the Bible app
And everyone loves their HWCT translation.
17. Everyone seems to know what they're talking about when they quote scripture
...Not everyone is called into ministry, but it's the thought that counts.
18. Everyone (and I mean everyone) knows all the lyrics to Jesus Freak
"It wiggled around like marmalade jelly"
