18 Reasons Why Local Sororities Are The Best Sororities
Emma Trager

Greek life plays a huge role on many college campuses. At most large and many small universities, these organizations are recognized across the nation. You’ll have “sisters” on the other side of the country in chapters at another school you didn’t even know existed, creating connections you didn’t know you had. Don’t get me wrong; it is awesome to have connections like this, especially in today’s networking based world.

However, imagine knowing every single girl in your organization. There are only a few girls in the whole country wearing your letters, knowing your traditions. People outside of my school may not recognize my letters, but I don’t need them to. Never once have I wished I belonged to a national organization. Here are 18 reasons why girls in local sororities have fallen in love with them.

  1. You know every single girl in your organization and have a personal relationship with her.
  2. You can trace the history of members of your sorority and your family line back to the beginning.
  3. You don't have a national organization to answer to.
  4. Things like Standards don't exist.
  5. You don’t pay thousands of dollars every semester to participate, and get even more out of being a member.
  6. Not only do you know every girl in your organization, you also know just about every single person in Greek life on your campus.
  7. The tight knit community leads to a high likelihood of meeting your future spouse in Greek life.
  8. You probably have a "brother" fraternity.
  9. You never have to worry about your sorority getting a bad reputation from another chapter on a different campus.
  10. Your sorority house holds 12 girls at most.
  11. You have more leadership opportunities.
  12. You can count on meetings always taking less than an hour.
  13. We do just as much, if not more, community service.
  14. Only members and alumni from your sorority on your campus know your traditions.
  15. When you meet an alumnus who was active years ago, it’s that much cooler since there are so few members throughout the history of your organization.
  16. You can talk about traditions with said alumni that are still actively present in the sorority today.
  17. Our pledge is meaningful and by the end, you feel like you've earned your letters.
  18. Your sorority is unique and can never be replicated.

I love my local sorority, but whether local or national, your own organization will always hold a special place in your heart. Ultimately, we’re all Greek, and we’re all in this together.

Sorority

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
