This past year, I made a lot of changes. I graduated from high school (thank god!) and finished my freshman year at the University of Houston. I made a lot of new friends, lost some old friends, made mistakes, learned from them, and even became a double major. But perhaps the biggest change that is happening this year, is my family moving to Houston. We are leaving Austin, Texas behind after 10 years. And, honestly, I'm going to miss it.
1. Zilker Park (and Bark)
Anytime you go to Zilker Park, you're bound for an adventure. You'll see adorable dogs, maybe some eclectic people hula hooping on a bench and the spontaneous games of football, soccer, or beach volleyball.
2. Sno-Beach
Sno-Beach is the Austin staple for amazing snow cones. No snow cones can even come close to the perfectly shaped snow cones they serve.
3. The 360 Bridge
On the edge of Austin is the famous 360 Bridge. Every tourist goes to take a picture there as well as the Austin natives. The view is amazing and something that cannot be beaten.
4. Austin City Limits
ACL is the place to be during October. Even if you were unable to go, you watch all the performances on Snapchat so it's almost like you were there! With two weeks of musical stars hanging around Austin, you're bound to see someone famous.
5. Ballet Austin
This studio has a piece of my heart. Dancing here on and off for the better part of 10 years with my mom were some of the best memories that I have of Austin.
6. The Frost Bank
In my opinion, the Frost Bank is the most beautiful building in Austin. I am always in awe of the glass work at the top of the building.
7. Food Trailer Parks
Sure, there are food trucks everywhere, but having food truck trailer parks is unique to Austin. Some of the best food comes out of those trucks. If given the chance, try The Peached Tortilla and The Mighty Cone.
8. The Bats
Watching the bats fly out from underneath the bridge on Congress is a mesmerizing act of nature. Every Austinite should see this at least once in their life.
9. Barton Springs
Have you ever wanted to swim in a spring that is a stable 62 degrees year round? Either way, you should go to the springs to witness a true Austin sight.
10. South Congress
Loco SoCo. A mix of amazing restaurants such as Hopdoddy Burger Bar and Homeslice Pizza, stores such as Uncommon Objects and Allen's Boots, and famous wall art.
11. Matthew McConaughey
I would be lying if I said I won't miss good ole Matthew. Not only is he an amazing actor, he's an iconic figure for Austin. Whether it's being seen on the UT campus or maybe on the St. Michael's Catholic Academy campus, seeing him is a blessing.
12. The Austin Zoo
A small sanctuary zoo placed on the outskirts of Austin is a perfect getaway for anyone.
13. Hamilton Pool
One of the better-kept secrets of Austin, this small pool placed between Lake Travis and Dripping Springs is now only available by reservation but definitely worth it.
14. HOPE Outdoor Gallery
The castle on the hill. The graffiti park. This is the HOPE Outdoor Gallery. The perfect place for anyone to let their creative side show. Bonus: At the top, the view of downtown Austin is remarkable.
15. Westlake v. Lake Travis
The battle of the Lakes. Both schools and teams are equally as great but the rivalry between them is one of the best in Texas. Truly something that will stand the test of time.
16. The Broken Spoke
Now a Texas Landmark, The Broken Spoke is on Lamar Avenue placed between huge high-rise apartments. The Broken Spoke's magic is not lost on anyone though. Go for some two-steppin' or even to go see what a true honky-tonk looks like.
17. P-Terry's
It's a Friday night, after a football game, where do all of the kids go? P-Terry's. The best place to dip your fries in your chocolate shakes, a secret sauce that's actually secret, and one of the best veggie burgers in Austin.
18. It's my hometown.
Austin has shaped who I am today. I would not be where I am today without Austin. So while Houston may be my home for the next couple of years, Austin always has a place in my heart. Please, please, please, Keep Austin Weird.
