College is rough. You think it's going well, then all of a sudden you're failing 9 classes when you're only taking 6. These are some tips to surviving and thriving in college.

1. Dollar Tree is your best friend

Everything is a dollar!

2. Never take a class with a teacher who has an F rating on Rate My Professor

If it is an absolute must, make sure your GPA is reading for the impact.

3. Find a reliable alarm clock

If your regular alarm clock fails to get you out of bed for your 8am class, you might want to consider a better alarm clock. There are many apps that force you to get out of bed.

4. Always keep a planner

"Was that assignment due tomorrow or Friday?"

5. Google Calendar is good

You won't always have your calendar or planner in hand, but your phone will be.

6. Set out clothes the night before

You have 5 minutes to get to your first class and you're still in your Power Puff Girl pajamas. Save the hassle of trying on 5 different outfits by just picking out your clothes the night before.

7. Never leave your laundry in the laundry room

You might not see those $50 jeans ever again.

8. Take a carryout box to the dining hall

Extra food. Score.

9. Dress nice for an exam or quiz

You will do better, it is a proven fact.

10. Utilize tutoring and health services

Most colleges have these free services, which can help you in class or help your stress levels.

11. The best stress relief is a Skype sesh

There is nothing better than seeing your best friend that you haven't seen in weeks. Or Skyping your mom just to see your dog.

12. Always upload everything into Google Docs

You never know when your computer will decide when it's last day is. And when your computer goes, so do all the files on them.

13. Do not buy an expensive parking pass

If your school has an outrageous price for their parking pass, just find a side street to park it on (Move it every once it awhile so it doesn't get towed). Also check out your city's bus routes.

14. Download Study Blue for flashcards on the go

That stack of 53 notecards is going to be a hassle. With Study Blue you can easily store all of your notecards and quiz yourself. It's also free!

15. Keep more than one charger

It's 1:30 in the middle of the night. Your phone is about to die, so you plug it in to charge it. Low and behold, your charger doesn't work. Nothing is open until morning, so the only option is to stay up all night so you don't miss class. Don't let this happen to you by always keeping a spare charger.

This happened to me.

16. Make use of the silent notifications option

This option is a blessing, especially when you get added to a group chat of 13 people

17. Carry a water bottle and a snack

You never know when you'll be thirsty or hungry

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
