17 Things I Want To Do In 2017

Every year on January 1st millions of people start their new year resolutions. New years resolutions range from wanted to loose weight to wanting to save money to trying something new. Unfortunately, studies show that people rarely stick to these goals and ultimately fall back into old habits. As 2017 approaches rapidly, I've put a lot of thought into what I might want to make my new years resolution. After reflecting on 2016, I couldn't think of many things I wanted to change, but rather things I didn't do. Instead of setting a goal that I would ultimately give up before my birthday (which is in February), I decided to make a 2017 bucket list.

1. Drink more water- Sounds basic, I know. But water basically fixes everything.

2. Eat more vegetables - And by this I mean, real vegetables not the fried green beans fries that I've come to love so much.

3. Get more sleep - Every college students dream, am I right?

4. Try something new - New Year, New Me?

5. Learn to budget my money - Lets figure out what percent of my money goes to Dunkin' Donuts, and work around that.

6. Do more community service - I love community service, and I don't get to do it as often as I would like, this year I want to spend more time giving back.

7. Read more books - All I read in tweets and instagram captions, don't get me wrong, they're all great but, I want to read more books. Things longer than 140 characters.

8. Spend more time outside - I mean, how else am I going to catch pictures of the sunset for my snapstories?

9. Spend less time on social media - Live more in the moment, ya know?

10. Talk more in person, rather than over the phone - Lets get coffee and casually take a candid picture for instagram.

11. Travel - Everyone wants to travel to experience new things, learn about other cultures. Me too, and theres no where, where I'd rather be than on a beach sippin' something cold.

12. Listen to more music - The radio plays the same 20 songs all day, and as much as I love that Bruno Mars song, I need to broaden my musical horizons.

13. Smile more - The duck face is so overrated, and I can't seem to get that cute serious face for my selfies...So smiling it is, I guess.

14. Start a garden- I've never been able to keep plants alive. When I eventually get my own apartment I want to get a dog, so I'm going to practice taking care of things with a plant.

15. Do my absolute best in school - I (aka my mom) spends too much money on my education for me to not be getting a 4.0.

16. Laugh more - Life is stressful, especially for us undergrads. When everything seems to be too much, just laugh it off. Ha...Ha...

17. Be the best version of me possible. - In all seriousness, a new year is like a fresh start. A new year can change your life. No matter how terrible the year before was, it's important to learn from your mistakes and keep moving forward.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
