Many people say that 2016 was a bust year. However, entering the new year with this type of outlook will set up 2017 to be an uphill battle. Before sulking in the pits of last year and dragging them into the future, consider some of the positive things you have going for you this year. Here are 17 things to be thankful for in 2017:

1. The freedom to bicker, complain, or support politics.

2. Social media and it's networking capabilities.

3. Local businesses that can make shopping more fun.

4. The opportunity to attend school.

5. Toilet paper.

6. Discounted candy after the holidays.

7. Morgan Freeman's voice.

8. The freedom to practice your religion.

9. Google as a resource for information.

10. Google Translate.

11. Lower gas prices than years' past.

12. Friends who can make staying up late worth it.

13. Heaters.

14. Coffee shops.

15. Home coffee brewers when you can't make it to the coffee shops.

16. Police officers and other public service men and women.

17. Those good-hearted, selfless people who are lending helping hands each and everyday under the radar of the mass media.

Enter 2017 with a positive mind! The world isn't all bad, and a new year means new opportunities, so cease them! Remember to say "thank you" more often. Keep in mind that your worst day could be someone else's best day.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
