You don't need to have everything figured out.

As my baby sister turns 17 this week, I started reflecting on my life when I was her age and wondering what I would have done differently. I figured out all of the mistakes that I don’t want her (or any other 17-year-old girl) to make, and came up with 17 important things to keep in mind at 17.

  1. Don’t accept anything less than you deserve. Know how much you’re worth and never settle.
  2. Be nice to your family. No matter what’s going on, they love you and only want the best for you. Appreciate all the time you have with them.
  3. Senior year doesn’t have to be stressful- make it whatever you want it to be.
  4. College applications are a pain- get them done early. Seriously, you’ll thank yourself later.
  5. You don’t need to have everything figured out yet. 17 is the age where everyone is pressuring you about what you’re going to do with your life, but it’s okay if you have no idea. Things will fall into place at the right time.
  6. He does not define you. How a boy treats you is not who you are. Don’t lose yourself trying to impress him.
  7. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t. Prove them wrong.
  8. Have nights worth remembering. Go out every chance you get, because you won’t make memories sitting home alone on a Saturday night.
  9. You are also allowed to have nights to just sit in your sweats and binge watch Netflix- sometimes that’s much more appealing than going out.
  10. You are allowed to do whatever it takes to make yourself happy. Sometimes you need to put yourself first because it’s what’s best for you. Understand how important your own happiness is.
  11. Loving yourself first is the most important thing. Before you trust someone else with your heart, learn to trust yourself. Remember this today and every day after.
  12. Never let anyone or anything keep you from seeing your self worth. Get rid of toxic people and toxic relationships- you’ll be so much happier.
  13. Getting your heart broken is not the end of the world. Allow yourself a 12-hour grieving period to cry, eat terrible food and watch terrible movies- then get it together and remember who you are.
  14. Don’t focus on what other people think of you or what they expect you to do. The world is full of people who think they have you on a tight leash- don’t give them the satisfaction.
  15. Stop comparing yourself to other people. “A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms.” Being different is beautiful.
  16. Do more things that make you smile. Figure out what makes you excited to be alive and go for it.
  17. You are stronger and capable of so much more than you think. Push yourself now, thank yourself later.

This is the time in your life when it’s most important to remember who you are and what you want. Don’t lose yourself before you even find yourself. Here’s to a year full of happiness and adventures!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
