Being a day camp counselor is a daily struggle. It's like the most extreme form of babysitting known to man. It may not be an office job, but you still have long, grueling hours, while outside in the heat, taking care of dozens of kids, activity after activity. For every day camp counselor out there, you understand all the hardships we face day in and day out. And if you never were one, here's an inside scoop on what it's like...
1. You have to wake up basically as early as you do for school.
2. And then endure a hella long bus ride, just you and your sleepy thoughts.
3. You're in charge of a bunch of tiny human beings for 7 hours when you can barely take care of yourself.
4. These tiny human beings called campers go to the bathroom ALL THE TIME.
5. And the nurse ALL THE TIME.
I swear I'm on a first name basis with the nurse at this point. If there is even an inkling of blood or the slightest trip when walking, we'll be walking to the office in no time.
6. They are legitimately hungry the entire day.
I've had a camper ask me when do we get snack WHILE we were eating lunch, I kid you not.
7. Speaking of food, you're almost convinced you are turning into an 8 year-old thanks to these camp lunches.
8. You always have to nag them about swimming, especially during instructional.
9. Or they'll ask you why you're not swimming as if you guys are equals or something.
10. Or worse, you're told you have to go in.
11. They barely know how to change in and out of their swimsuits by themselves.
12. And if they do, they're really, really, REALLY slow.
13. Sometimes they ask you personal questions in which you do your very best to dodge all the answers to.
"Do you have a boyfriend?" "Where do you live?" "How old are you?"
14. You have the lyrics to "A Little Birdy in a Tree" and "The Littlest Worm" engrained in your brain forever.
15. You finally get on the bus for the ride home and you're so damn tired.
16. You completely collapse onto your bed when you get home and don't move except to maybe eat.
17. But the biggest struggle of all is when those eight weeks are up... and you have to say goodbye to the cutest, funniest, best campers you could ever ask for.
Being a day camp counselor can be rough, but when we look back at our summer, we know it was a summer to remember and cherish.
