17 Resolutions for 2017

2016 is FINALLY over! I think we can all agree that it was a pretty rough year across the board. But as Queen Elsa so boldly reminded us, "the past is in the past". Here's to hoping '17 will be the year to make up for the craziness of '16. So as I have done every year since I can remember, I have compiled a list of New Year's resolutions that I would like to share with all of you. Some of them may be a bit far fetched, such as "study every day", but I think the rest of them are quite attainable. Join me friends, and let's make 2017 a year our posterity will be proud to read about in their history books.

1. Exercise every day

Walking from my bedroom to my kitchen counts as exercise, right?

2. Eat healthier

All the chips I eat from now on will be baked (they're healthier that way).

3. Watch more cute puppy videos

Well this one's just a given. Who doesn't love cute puppy videos?

4. Study every day

Like I said before, I don't know about this one. But I will attempt it. Just kidding, this one is just too much.

5. Don't procrastinate on assignments

I might keep this resolution... I'll decide tomorrow.

6. Don't let the existential dread set in

DON'T LET IT SET IN.

7. Share less Inner Kermit memes

*Me*: Stop sharing so many Kermit memes. You're annoying every one.

*Inner Me*: Keep doing it, they secretly relish in them.

8. Try to get over Harambe

It's been a little over seven months now, but I still shudder every time I think about the poor creature. RIP big guy.

9. Spend less time on social media

Nahhhh, Snapchat is too crucial to give up. And Facebook is how I stay connected with the world since all I really do is stay in my room. *cue "Indoors" from Spongebob Squarepants*

10. Read a new book every month

This may be one of the easiest ones to achieve. Or it would be if I didn't have to balance school, work, theatre, a social life, and my much needed Netflix time.

11. Forget that Hillary v Trump actually happened

That drama was just too extra. The world doesn't need that kind of stress and conflict ever again.

12. Singlehandedly save the Great Barrier Reef

It can happen!

13. Start a support group for penguins who've been cheated on

Because every living creature deserves love.

14. Try to overcome your desperate nostalgia for simpler times

What can I say? I'm a millennial. We crave the late '90s/early '00s.

15. Never let your bank account drop below $100

Yeaaaaah, this one might be a stretch too.

16. Try not to skip any classes

Hahahahahahahaha.

17. Finally, achieve world peace

PLEASE CAN THERE JUST BE SOME PEACE FOR ONCE?

A Few Thoughts Every College Freshman Has

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
