17 Cheap Activities To Do This Summer

Whether you are home for the coming months or staying close to campus, there is always something you could be doing with your time! Here is a list of free things you should plan to achieve within the next few months. Oh, and try to come up with a group of friends to go through the list with, because no one likes to have a lonely summer!

1. Plant a garden.

Or simply plant a flower! The Dollar Tree sells everything you need as a beginner. Even if you have never tried to grow anything before, college dorms and apartments are great for experimenting with your green thumb.

2. Write to a friend that is at home for the summer.

In a world filled with technology, a friend at home for the summer may in fact love the gesture of a handwritten letter, just as a reminder that you're thinking of them.

3. Read a book.

Getting lost in a good book is one of the best remedies for boredom.

4. Start an exercise regimen.

There are thousands of at-home exercise plans that won't cost you any gym membership fees, because who wants those?

5. Simply sit outside, and listen to Pandora.

Everyone needs some time to themselves, but sometimes the curse of staying on campus for the summer means you will be alone more often than you anticipated. Simply grab your phone or laptop, go sit on your porch and just lay back and watch the clouds move past. Music can cure any loneliness.

6. Build your own slip-n-slide.

All you need is a big tarp and a rainy day, and you are set!

7. At home science experiments.

The supplies are cheap, and the experiments are fun and easy. Who ever said science experiments were only for school?

8. Don't forget to take advantage of sleeping in too.

Because whether we like it or not … classes are right around the corner.

9. Make up your own game.

I know most of you are familiar with the "Lava Game" most kids played in elementary school, right? (See GIF above if you are unfamiliar). Make like a kid again, and use your imagination!

10. Build a bonfire.

Bonfires are summer's signature nighttime activity. It is free, unless you want to make s'mores that is, and extremely relaxing.

11. Revamp some old tees with scissors and a few knots.

Cutting up old T-shirts never cost any money! Just pick a tee you thought you would never wear again, and there you have it! It's the perfect afternoon project.

12. Stay up late, and watch the stars.

Grab a blanket and some tunes, and get lost in the stars. It is free, easy and totally worth it.

13. Tanning (the real kind).

Because who fake-n-bakes in the summer?

14. Go for a long bike ride.

Summertime is for enjoying the beautiful weather we are given. Bike rides are the perfect way to do just that.

15. Make arts and crafts out of leaves.

It may seem elementary, but simply walk outside and grab a few leaves off of some trees. Then put your imagination to the test, and see what you create!

16. Refurbish some old furniture.

It's the good ole, “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" technique. You will be happily surprise with yourself once you take some old furniture you never thought you would use again, and you turn it into something creative and …usable.

17. Have a good old fashioned sleepover!

Sleepovers are the key to bringing everyone back together for just one night (or two) of the summer. I don't care if you are a girl or a guy, everyone needs hang out sessions with their buds.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
