It is a truth universally acknowledged that a college student experiencing stress must have a multitude of unhealthy coping mechanisms. I dare say that there is not a single one among us who hasn't given into the pressure and anxiety of pursuing a higher education. But there is no shame in how you deal with your stress. We have all been there. Just remember that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There will come a day when your life doesn't revolve around deadlines. In the meantime, here are some of the bestways that college students have coped with their stress.
1. Eating your problems away
I have no clue how to draw out mitosis, but I do know that I can get a large pizza at Dominos for less than $9. Might as well stick with what I know.
2. Sleeping at inappropriate times
I could go to my 10 am class, but I already went to my 8 am so I think I deserve a nap.
3. Binge-watching TV shows
Okay, I'll just watch one episode and then I'll start studying. *6 episodes later* Well I might as well finish the season.
4. Talking about how much you have to do without actually doing any of it
I'm so busy it's insane. I have so much to do. Let me tell you how much I have to do. Have I done any of it yet? No, but that's only because I've been so busy.
5. Calling home
Hey, mom, you know how you said you missed me? Well if I fail out of college I can move home full-time!
6. Cocktail therapy
I read a study that a glass of wine a day has been shown to improve one's health. So I'll drink three just to make sure I stay healthy.
7. Putting things on your to-do list that you have already done so that you can cross them off and feel productive
I walked across campus to my second class so that was exercise. I also talked to my professor about a paper so that was some socializing. I think it's been a productive day.
8. Some good, old-fashioned online shopping
Okay, I just need to buy this textbook off Amazon. Don't buy anything else. Ooh, I could use a fancy planner...and a clipboard... maybe some candles to help set the study mood...
9. Having extended conversations with your pets
All you do all day is eat, sleep, play and cuddle. You are living my ideal life. Please tell me more about how you do it. Tell me your secrets you beautiful fluff muffin.
10. Picking up a random hobby
I would totally come to your study group, but I really need to train for my hobby horse competition next weekend.
11. Looking up how much money you could make once you get your degree
One day, I'll actually be able to go out to dinner without being sad about spending more than $15 on a meal! What a life I will live.
12. Watching motivational videos to hype yourself up
If I just work hard and do what needs to be done... I will succeed. Wow, these videos are great. I'm just going to watch a few more to make sure I stay super motivated.
13. Going to the gym so you can feel good about yourself while ignoring the presentation and two tests you have tomorrow
I may not pass microbiology but at least I'll be in shape.
14. Telling your friends you are going to be a better student from now on
Guys I'm really going to focus on studying from now on. I'm totally not going to get distracted anymore... you're going out for teriyaki? I'm there.
15. Having a nice little cry session
Sometimes its good to cry for a few minutes to purge out the stress. Or a few hours. Whatever works.
16. Giving yourself the ultimate pep talk
You is kind, you is smart, you is too broke to stay in college so you better graduate soon.
