16 Truths About Having Siblings Who Are Way Younger Than You

Often, I wonder what it would be like to have siblings that are close to my age. Would I have played with them growing up? Would we have gone to the same elementary, middle and high schools? Would we get into a lot of arguments?

These questions will never be answered for me since I am 19 years old, my brother is eight and my sister is three. Yes, that's right, I am eleven years older than my brother and sixteen years older than my sister.

No matter how many years separate us, I love my siblings with all my heart and they are two of my best friends in the world. Instead of growing up with them, I get to watch them grow up, give them advice and sometimes, I get to be a kid again with them.

1. People always ask you if your siblings are your kids.

You just say "no" and wonder why no one has boundaries anymore.

2. Then, people ask you if you're the babysitter.

The real question is, why does it matter?

3. You know children's TV shows and characters really well.

Even the new ones that no one else your age has ever heard of.

4. When you're not home, your siblings ask nonstop when you're coming back.

Every time they hear a door open, they think it's you and they come running. Who knew kids could move that fast?

5. You're a built-in babysitter.

Now you realize why your parents are always so tired

6. You get really good at playing "I spy" and "20 questions."

Like, scary good. Is this a skill you can put on your resume?

7. Your siblings tell you a lot of jokes that just don't make sense (but you always laugh anyway).

"Knock knock." "Who's there?" "Lightbulb." "Lightbulb who?" "Lightbulb on sandwich!" "Do you mean, 'lightbulb sandwich,' maybe?" "No. Lightbulb on sandwich!"

8. Your siblings act as your personal alarm clock during holidays.

Don't you love waking up to giggling and breathing in your ear?

9. You always find a variety of your siblings' toys in your room.

They always forget to take their toys with them when they're done sneaking into your room.

10. You're a personal bodyguard.

And occasionally, your siblings are your personal bodyguard too.

11. You've memorized at least half of all popular children's books.

"Arthur the Aardvark?" Check. "The Berenstain Bears?" Check. "To Give A Mouse A Cookie?"Check.

12. Your siblings are always excited to see you when you come home.

Hugs on hugs on hugs!

13. You get to hear all of their favorite songs. Over, and over, and over again.

At least one of these songs is probably from the "Frozen" soundtrack.

14. You have a box full of their artwork.

You will never, ever throw it away because it's simply the cutest thing ever.

15. You're a whiz with Play-Dough.

Your siblings, on the other hand, make a bunch of "worms" and then get bored.

16. They're always your baby siblings, no matter how old they are.

This will be true even when you're all adults.

No matter how many years are between you and your siblings, you always know that the bond will last a lifetime.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
