While I could make an extensive list of all the things we should change about ourselves in the new year, the reality is that most of these changes are extensive, time-consuming and ultimately unrealistic. However, I have good news. Here are 16 things to look forward to in the upcoming year, and, plot twist, they take little to no effort on your part. Hooray!
1. Watching Donald Trump not win the 2016 Presidential Election.
While the polls make it seem as though Donald Trump may have a serious chance at becoming the next President of the United States, it will be a cold day in hell before he gets elected. But if you're still a little nervous about him sitting in the oval office, perhaps that should motivate you to get out and vote.
2. Breaking all of your New Year's resolutions in less than two weeks.
"I'm going to only eat kale and quinoa, and go to the gym seven times a week." We love the positivity, but perhaps something a little more realistic will help you stick with it.
3. A winter that didn't suck as much as last year.
Shout-out to our homeboy El Niño for coming in clutch with unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean! While you'll still be able to meet your snowman quota, you'll hopefully not have to do as much shoveling.
4. Watching Team USA crush it in the 2016 Olympics.
We won 103 medals in 2012 and are hungry for more. After the Men's and Women's World Cups, perhaps we can begin to break the "Americans suck at soccer" stereotype.
5. Trading your moderately new iPhone in for the brand new iPhone 7 because everyone will have it.
Proceeds to get the new iPhone for Christmas and then buys the new one in April even though there is nothing wrong with the "old" one.
6. Adele making everyone simultaneously joyful and heartbroken on her world tour.
With the return of Adele, the only thing you're going to be rolling in is a puddle of your own tears after listening to her sing.
7. Seeing all of the babies born in 1995 celebrate their 21st birthdays.
Ah yes, the millennials are finally legal. If you thought we were entitled, then just wait until our 21st birthdays.
8. After years of advertisements, finally seeing Pixar's "Finding Dory."
It seems as if Pixar has been floating around "Finding Dory" advertisements for the past four years. Who knows, maybe they'll just keep pushing the premiere back and we will never find Dory.
9. Witnessing Tom Brady raise a big middle finger to Roger Goodell after winning his fifth Superbowl.
Hopefully I'm not jinxing this, but despite Goodell being an absolute jerk to Brady at the beginning of the year, the Patriots are having a killer season and are hungry for another ring. Wouldn't that just be the cherry on top?
10. Thinking that it's March 1 when it's actually February 29.
Surprise! Happy leap year!
11. Watching more and more SNL skits of the Presidential debates.
If the real debates weren't funny enough, SNL made them funnier. More Larry David and Kate McKinnon, please.
12. Hopefully see a huge millennial voting turnout in the next election.
Note to self: If I don't want Trump as president, I should probably register to vote and do something about it.
13. Posting an Instagram with the caption "New year, new me."
If there are no pictures, then it didn't happen, right?
14. Watching Big Papi finish his MLB career with a bang.
While it will be sad to see Big Papi leave the Red Sox after next season, the Red Sox's can hopefully close out his career with a stellar record (and perhaps a World Series win).
15. Binge watching the new season of "House of Cards" and every other Netflix series (if you haven't already).
Honestly, you can look forward to this any year, nothing special here. Regardless, it's still pretty awesome.
16. Getting to the end of 2016 and wondering how in the world this year could have gone by so quickly.
This is your chance to look back on all of your highs, your lows and all of the things you said you'd do but never did. Whether it was an exciting or uneventful year, there will always be something to look forward to.
