16 Things I Learned From 2016

Although you weren't an easy year by any means, you were a year of growth.

2016,

Let's both clear the air with the obvious: you were one tough cookie. You didn't bring me fame, fortune, or a dreamy MLB player (but I guess I can forgive you for that). But in all seriousness, you were the year I wasn't expecting. As a relentless planner, I thought I knew exactly what you would bring, and boy was I not ready for your surprises. But as your time begins to close, I'm able to reflect on all of it, the storms, mistakes, heartaches, loss, laughter, smiles, memories, and new beginnings with a new perspective. And although you weren't an easy year by any means, you were an amazing year for growth. Through all of the unexpected twists and turns of your 365 glorious days, I learned so much from it all. Here are just a few examples...

1. It's okay to put yourself first sometimes, because you are a priority.

2. You're going to make mistakes, but it's vital to forgive yourself and learn from it.

3. Time is a precious, precious, thing. Give it to those who care about you and don't waste it on those who don't.

4. Find the little things that make you tick. Whether it be writing your feelings or blind-folded water polo, take the time to do those things.

5. Hold your family close. Love them fearlessly because they love you like no other, and you need them more than you know.

6. Do not EVER say no strictly out of fear. Missed opportunities are one of the biggest mistake a person can make.

7. Don't let your feelings be silenced. You were given a voice for a reason and don't be afraid of using it.

8. Hard work sows much earned reward. Don't let others make you feel ashamed for what you rightfully earned.

9. People grow apart and that's okay. No, you don't have to hate them. If anything wish them the best because they were an important part of your journey.

10. Take a moment to breathe and look around you. Be grateful for what's around you and what God put in your life.

11. Just because you plan something, doesn't mean it will work out that way. Learn to go with the flow of things.

12. It's okay not to be okay. You don't have to put on a show for everyone else.

13. Bad things will happen, but it's important to remember that they end. Look for the light.

14. Don't ever miss the opportunity to tell someone how much you care about them. Life is entirely too short.

15. You are who you surround yourself with. Toxic company makes for misery.

16. Don't be afraid of change. It may hurt a little, or be scary, but it is always, always better than a life of "what ifs". You owe yourself that much.

So, 2016, thank you. You and your lessons were truly a blessing in disguise.

And 2017, I hope you're ready. Because 2016 and it's many, many lessons molded me into a force to be reckoned with.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
