Franciscan University Missions of Peace

Serving a mission is one of the most daunting, stressful, enlightening, and rewarding experiences I have ever gone through. Whether you have served one mission or twenty, you might be able to relate to these steps from preparation to reflection that feel like a right of passage for missionaries.

Where to?With so many options, how can you choose just one? Chastity talks or homeless ministry? One of the hardest parts is narrowing down which to apply for.
Application Status: SubmittedYou did it! After filling it out the first day you got it, losing it for a week, only to find it crumpled in your bag and having to fill out another one just minutes before the deadline, your application(s) is finally in.
The Waiting GameRumors are going around about which missions will have interviews when, so you mentally calculate the most appropriate time for you to receive that call or text scheduling your interview, and you refuse to stop checking your phone every 20 minutes until it happens.
What am I supposed to wear?So you got the call and set a time for an interview. Easy. Now you have prep for the interview. Not as easy. What do I wear? How many jokes do I tell without looking desperate? What if they don’t understand my sarcasm? Just how much of my testimony do I share?
The Waiting Game Part IIPart II is arguably more difficult since it immediately follows the interview. It’s so close… yet so far away. Here’s to hoping that closing prayer you led was charismatic enough for the mission leads.
After a lot of prayer and discernment…You have been accepted on the mission team! Whoop whoop! There may be more grey hairs on your head than when you applied, but who cares! It’s time to spread the good news.
Am I even holy enough for this? That initial moment of doubt typically happens at your first meeting when you meet the rest of your team. You already have an idea of who has served what missions in the past, and the intimidation alone is stressing you out.
“Yes, you are.” -GodNow that you have fully realized what you have gotten yourself into, you head into a panic prayer session in the chapel where God reminds you why the heck you applied in the first place. You walk out confident saying, “Jesus, I trust in you." You got this.
Team MeetingsSome missions have months to prepare, some have merely days. Whether the time is spent fundraising, playing team bonding games, or planning talks and retreats, you will probably feel overwhelmed at one point or another. The majority of surrender and trust occurs during these meetings, because the control freaks on the team (leaders included) have to accept how much is out of their control.
Next Stop: The Mission FieldThe team is en route, offering up their travel rosary as soon as the wheels get rolling. Everyone is trying to put their expectations aside as they take in the last few moments of calm before the storm.
It’s go timeAll the training has led to this marathon. This is what you've been waiting for. Here’s to a week of constant outpouring, desperate prayers, and growing deeper in our Lord’s love for us all for the sake of His Kingdom.
You’re mistaken, it’s not Friday. The end of the week is rapidly approaching, yet it feels like you barely arrived. You spent the last days in denial that your time in this ministry is ending. You begin to cherish every single moment where you’re at, with the people around you.
“Will you ever come back?”The single most heart wrenching question that always seems to come up. Your heart is desperately saying yes, but your brain is hesitant. Well, a novena asking to come back never hurt anyone.
I did what? You’re home, finally with a moment to catch your breath. Your prayers are filled with thanksgiving for the experience, and personalized prayers for each person you encountered. Everything you accomplished during the week begins to sink in, and you can’t help but be amazed by how the Lord worked in you and through you.
Round IIYou don't know what you have until it's gone, and your team is the perfect example. You're constantly feeling nostalgic and want nothing more than to go back and relive it. When's that mission fair again?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
