16 Signs That You And Your Roommate Are Best Friends

Meeting your roommate for the first time can be terrifying. There are so many horrible roommate stories. You hear about roommates stealing stuff, leaving open food and clothes everywhere, or just being your worst nightmare. The few weeks leading up to the start of school, you are just praying that you get a normal roommate.

You’ve been messaging trying to get to know each other for a few months, figuring out if your colors are going to coordinate, who is bringing the fridge and who is bringing the microwave. You might get lucky and find the perfect roommate the first try, or you might have to go through a couple before you finally find the person that meshes well with you. Here are the signs that you and your roommate have become best friends.

1. You watch TV shows and movies together.

"Don’t start season 4 of 'Parks and Rec' without me!"

2. They are your shoulder to cry on.

Whether you are missing home or are just super stressed out, they will be there to listen to your problems and just let you cry as much as you need to.

3. You are each other’s second mom.

They are always looking out for you, whether it’s when you are sick or need to get your laundry but you have class in five minutes, they will always be there to help out.

4. You make plans to see each other even during breaks from school.

Whether it’s a short car ride away or a plane trip across the country, you are willing to go to visit them.

5. You know all about their friends from back home.

Even if you have never met the people she’s talking about, you know exactly who they are and what they look like.

6. You know everything about them.

Favorite movie, food, color, sports team, what they did in 7th grade, you know everything.

7. Some nights you stay up later than you should, just talking.

You might have an 8 a.m. the next morning, but staying up until 2 a.m. is worth it, because you love talking to them.

8. You’re lost when they are not there.

When they go home for a weekend, you have no idea what to do. You usually just end up sitting alone in the room, waiting for the other person to come back and texting them the whole time they are gone.

9. You have dance/singing parties.

Whether it’s the soundtrack to Hannah Montana or One Direction’s new album, you two always blast the music and just have fun.

10. There is no judgment between you two.

You feel fine eating an entire container of Nutella in front of her, because she will probably be helping you finish it.

11. You are always there to make each other feel better after a bad day.

Whether you got into a fight with your mom or you failed a test, they always know what to say to make you feel better.

12. There are no boundaries between the two of you.

You don’t even bother locking the door when you shower because you know they’ll be in to pee or brush their teeth. Sometimes you don’t even close the door, because you still want to talk to them.

13. You write each other letters.

You write each other thank you letters at the end of the semester for putting up with the other person. Or even just a card to cheer them up or make them more motivated for their upcoming finals.

14. They make being away from home easier.

You know they’ll do their best to cheer you up and make sure you are not too homesick.

15. You get each other's favorite snack when they’re sad.

One venti iced coffee and a bag of pretzels coming up.

16. Everyone else is constantly telling you how lucky you are to get along so well with your roommate.

It’s not just you who knows how amazing your bond is. Other people are jealous that they don’t get along with their roommate the same way you two get along.

Finding a person who you can spend endless hours with may be hard, but in the end it's worth it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
