16 Reasons Why I Love My Sorority
Jauntavia Prather

  1. Philanthropy: Charity work is the foundation of Greek life. From Tri Sigma's Robbie Page Memorial Foundation to Chi Omega's partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, we're all about giving back to the community. "To receive much, you must give much."
  2. Crafting: Even if you don't think you like crafting, it becomes a part of you and then it slowly takes over your entire life.
  3. Socials: Whether it's semi-formal, formal, or your sorority's signature annual social, you're destined to have a great time being surrounded by all of your favorite people, music, and over-the-top frat boys.
  4. Campus Involvement: If your sorority is anything like mine, you know that you have sisters all over campus that are involved in any and everything. Do you need scuba lessons? You know your favorite honor council chairman is a marine biology major. Need a quick lesson on ionic bonding? Lucky you; your President is a Chemistry major. Are you not involved in anything but you wish you were? The sister that stands three spots in front of you, in initiation order, works on campus as an involvement specialist.
  5. Sisterhood: For those of us that we're fortunate enough to go to the same schools as our high school/lifetime best friends, we know how important this sisterhood is. If you need a ride at 2 a.m. because your 21st birthday go a little out of hand, no worries, somebody will be there to pick you up in five minutes. If you need to cry because you have crazy boy problems, somebody will bring you Starbucks and let you cry on their shoulder until you run out of tears.
  6. Networking: Since everyone is from all over the country, you have plenty of connections in pretty much any place you need. When you need an internship, luckily you have a sister that worked in the Capitol Building the year before. If you want to learn more about becoming a sports broadcast journalist, one of your sisters works at the local news station.
  7. Travel experiences: Not only do you have the opportunity for you semi-annual retreats to take you all over the country, you're bound to have at least four people, at any given time, that are willing to go on a spontaneous road trip.
  8. Random acts of kindness: (Sigma) Pay It Forward.
  9. Chants/Cheers: You live for surprising all the PNMs during recruitment with your fantastic door stacks, letting everybody know who you are during roll call, or just exclaiming to the world that you're proud of your letters whenever you get ready.
  10. It’s my home away from home: Shout-out to all the girls that can bake amazing cookies just like my mama and sew a new button on to my cardigan like my grandma. You make this whole "college" thing a lot easier. Thanks for not letting my life fall completely apart.
  11. It’s a constant support system: You have a chair specifically designed to cheer people up. That's friendship at its finest.
  12. It keeps me busy: There's always something going on. Always.
  13. T-Shirts: TSTC. (Too SRAT To Care).
  14. My Big: She's half my soul, half my heart; without my Big, I'd fall apart.
  15. It’s not four years, it's for life.
  16. BID DAY: Bid Day is like Christmas. You get to wrap up (the above) numbers 1-15 and give them to your new members as they join your family and run around screaming, cheering, and crying; all in the name of sisterhood.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
