16 Inspirational Quotes For A Troubled World

We're in trouble. Anyone who is paying attention or even just vaguely aware of his or her surroundings knows that the world is a dangerous, frightening place. It may not have affected your life directly as of right now, but your life will eventually be touched because all of humanity has been touched. Terrorist attacks and brutal shootings have became almost a daily occurrence, and the world is too concerned with bickering or discussion or attempting to form a plan to actually take the action necessary to make a better future.

The time for talk is already past. It is time to fight back against the fire or else be consumed by the flames. Love only conquers hate when it is paired with positive action; simply saying that love conquers hate will do very little to win that battle. We must morn the travesties on our wounded planet but know that there is still hope for a future if we work -- we work hard and we work together. If you're looking for a little inspiration in that respect, here are 16 quotes that the world could stand to hear:

1. "Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness" - Desmond Tutu.

2. "A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just" - Pope Francis.

3. "The thing that lies at the foundation of positive change, the way I see it, is service to a fellow human being" - Lee Iacocca.

4. "At the end of the day, we must go forward with hope and not backward by fear and division" - Jesse Jackson.

5. "A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success" - Elbert Hubbard.

6. "The way to get started is to quit talking and being doing" - Walt Disney.

7. "No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path" - Buddha.

8. "We can be tired, weary and emotionally distraught, but after spending time alone with God, we find that He injects into our bodies energy, power and strength" - Charles Stanley.

9. "Nothing has more strength than dire necessity" - Euripides.

10. "Unity is strength... when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved" - Mattie Stepanek.

11. "Where there is unity there is always victory" - Publillius Syrus.

12. "You don't get unity by ignoring the questions that have to be faced" - Jay Weatherill.

13. "The reason why the world lacks unity, and lies broken and in heaps, is, because man is disunited with himself" - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

14. "You can't cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water" - Rabindranath Tagore.

15. "I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever" - Thomas Jefferson.

16. "You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once, but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own" - Michelle Obama.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
