I get it, our break is almost over, but that doesn’t mean we have to compromise productivity. And besides, you might find some of these ideas useful for next time.
1. Volunteer at your former school(s).
I love the classroom setting, and enjoy being able to share that enthusiasm with others. This is one of the highlights of my break.
2. Read.
Read literature, read books on self-improvement, read educational books… there’s so much to read and learn that I wish there were more hours in a day.
3. Learn how to code.
Or if you already do, learn a different programming language. Being “fluent” in Ruby on Rails or jQuery can only help you.
4. Learn a new language or improve on one you already know.
Duolingo is fun. Duolingo es divertido. Duolingo è divertente…and educational!
5. Get a job.
Text books aren’t going to pay for themselves.
6. Babysit.
Doing so has taught me tons about responsibility and working with children.
7. Travel.
Leaving your place, even for a little while, can teach you about your own culture.
8. Or, you can stay local.
If you opt for something more local such as Washington, DC, there’s many museums to explore.
9. Find an organization that you feel passionate about and volunteer.
Personally, I’m a volunteer for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Doing so has been life changing.
10. Order your books for next semester.
That way you can skip the book store rush and dreaded long pick-up lines.
11. Or even better, start reading some of your school books.
Getting a head start even if it’s only the first two chapters will make you more confident (and hopefully more eager to learn) as the new semester starts.
12. Thinking about renewing your CPR certification? Or becoming an EMT?
If there’s something that you want to accomplish or get certified in, now’s your chance.
13. Learn more about the profession or field you’re interested in.
Over break, I’ve been shadowing, and my experiences are something I could write articles on.
14. Figure out what your goals are for next semester.
15. And figure out how you’re going to accomplish them.
For me, it’s about creating a schedule and including built-in study time, review sessions, and office hours. I’m the type of person who appreciates structure and to-do lists. Find out what works for you.
