15 Ways To Destress
Newsbeat

Sometimes, life gets pretty overwhelming. With things being thrown your way quicker than you can manage to handle, there are days where you just need a break. You feel worn down, unmotivated, drained, and exhausted. We've all been there. Just remember, there is always something you can do to destress and recharge.

1. Go for a walk or a run.

Some fresh air and light exercise can go a long way when it comes to de-stressing. Even if running isn't necessarily your thing, a light job might feel great.

2. Cozy up in a warm blanket and take a nap.

This is always my go to. While some people don't like going to bed in a bad mood, I don't mind. It clears my head and I always wake up feeling refreshed and energized.

3. Watch a movie.

Movies are a great distraction. There's plenty of options- romance, comedy, action, horror... whatever you're in the mood for. You could just watch one or you could spend all day in front of the TV. Frankly, either way works!

4. Hangout with some friends or family.

Good friends and family are always able to brighten one's mood. It doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing, just being around positive people who support and love you is enough to cheer anyone up.

5. Take a hot bath.

Get a bath bomb, a candle, a drink, maybe some snacks, or even a good book. Spend as long as you want relaxing in a nice hot bath. Not only will it help you unwind mentally, but it will help relieve the tension in your body and muscles as well.

6. Say positive affirmations to yourself.

It's important to remind yourself all you have accomplished. Sometimes it's better to look at how far you've come rather than how far you have left to go. Take life a step at a time.

7. Eat.

Food is everyone's best friend in times of stress- that's why it's called "stress eating". Don't be ashamed to eat the entire kitchen if that's what you need.

8. Read a good book.

Nothing has the power to place you in an entirely different world like a good book does. Let your entire being delve into the book- hopefully it's impossible to put down without finishing first.

9. Listen to music.

Music, like a good book, has the ability to put you in a different world. Put on some headphones and just absorb the lyrics and music.

10. Try something new.

It doesn't matter what it is, just get up and do something you've never done before but have always wanted to do. You'll be glad you did.

11. Go outside.

The peacefulness accompanied by being surrounded by nature is true bliss. I feel bad for anyone who hasn't ever just walked outside and appreciated the beauty nature has to offer.

12. Yoga / Meditation.

Yoga and meditation come on all sorts of levels- beginners, intermediate, and advanced. Therefore, it doesn't matter if you aren't flexible or if you've never done it before- there's always somewhere you can start. The main goal of yoga and meditation is to relax and unwind, so as long as you can do that, you're doing it right!

13. Try breathing exercises.

Close your eyes. Inhale strength, positivity, and courage. Exhale the negativity, stress, built up thoughts and emotions, frustrations and sorrows.

14. Color in an adult coloring book.

Grab a blanket, sit by a warm fire, and just color. It's super simple and super relaxing.

15. Go to the gym.

While the gym may not be everyone's cup of tea, many people do find that working out helps to clear their head. It's worth a shot!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
