Not all of us are lucky enough to live in a place where it’s warm and sunny all the time. In a lot of places, winter is cold and dreary and it can have a detrimental effect on our moods. Some people are even diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder. So here are 15 ways to stay happy this winter!

1. Get organized.

Clean your room, get rid of old notebooks from last quarter, throw out those old mascaras… Being organized can help reduce anxiety, and less clutter will make you feel more calm and less stressed.

2. Clean up your diet.

Remember your mom telling you that “you are what you eat”? Well, she was right. Eating crap is going to make you feel like crap. Try to stick to whole, clean foods from now on. You will feel amazing!

3. Dance it out.

Create a killer playlist or find one off Spotify (I suggest the Shake Up Your Day one) and just dance for a bit.

4. Change your look.

This could be as simple as trying a different makeup look, or you could try dying your hair a crazy color. A new look makes you feel like a new person, and it's just really fun to try new things.

5. Sweat away your worries.

If you have access to a sauna, I suggest you try it. Sweating can help release the toxins in your body and make you feel AMAZING.

6. Cut out screen time.

Although we all love binge-watching Netflix, laying in bed all weekend can make you feel lazy and depressed. If you really need to watch something, watch with your friends. Talking to people in the same room as you is so much better than live tweeting.

7. Add working out to your daily routine.

Working out releases endorphins, which will make you feel so good and happy, and you always sleep better after working your ass off at the gym.

8. Plan a vacation.

Plan a fun trip to somewhere warm with friends for spring break. Giving you something fun to look forward to will help you get through the winter!

9. Take your mind off the cold.

Grab a couple of good friends, make some margaritas, and watch a movie set in a tropical destination. Watching "50 First Dates" is the second best thing after actually going to Hawaii.

10. Do some yoga.

If you don’t want to go to an actual yoga class, there are some pretty great yoga videos on YouTube.

11. Light up your life.

Winter can be so dark, so brighten up your room with some string lights or a Himalayan salt lamp, which have detoxifying properties. They are so much better than ugly dorm florescent lights, and you will feel like a much brighter person.

12. Pick up a book.

Try reading before bed instead of watching TV. You will sleep better and wake up feeling refreshed.

13. Take a break from social media.

Everyone knows how FOMO can have a negative impact on our mood, so try cutting out social media so you don’t have to hear your friend brag about the amazing vacation they just took.

14. Give your self a pep talk.

Give yourself a pep talk every day! There are even apps that give you daily reminders of how awesome you are.

15. Take it one day at a time.

Remember, if you are having a bad day, it's just a day. Nothing lasts forever and tomorrow will be better!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
