15 Truths of Going to a Small School

Going to a small school is a blessing and a curse. Speaking from experience, I attended a small private school from grades 6-12. It was definitely an "interesting" experience but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Going to such a small school, 33 in my graduating class, shaped me into the person I am today. Here are 15 things everyone who went to a small school know to be true.

  1. Picking partners for group projects is solely based on who you live closest to.
  2. You know your way around the whole town because you have friends in almost every neighborhood.
  3. Trips to friends houses were limited because it could be a 30 minute trek (or more).
  4. The time it took to write this sentence is equivalent to rumor travel time.
  5. Everything is cutthroat. From grades, to drama, to homecoming court, everything is ride or die.
  6. You learn to get along with everyone because the school is too small to burn bridges.
  7. Everyone will know every detail of that fight last week and you’ll never live it down.
  8. The dating pool (more like a dating puddle) is so small that bro code and girl code went out the door a long time ago.
  9. You wind up being very grateful for those plaid skirts and uniform shirts because you couldn’t deal with picking out an outfit everyday.
  10. Out-of-dress-code days were the ultimate fashion shows. Everyone was dressed to the nines you could bet money that at least one girl would be wearing the latest Lilly dress.
  11. Yes the curriculum is that hard, yes I have that much homework, no I’m not exaggerating.
  12. Skipping class is nearly impossible solely because the school is so small there’s no where to go.
  13. You know everyone’s name in every grade, their mom and dad’s name, what they do for a living, what kind of car they drive and their dog’s name.
  14. The friends you make in high school are friends for life. You watched each other grow up and probably know WAY too much about each other for you to “not” be friends. They’re not just friends, they’re family, future bridesmaids and groomsmen.
  15. In response to #13, it is also crucial to have friends who do not attend your school. It is just as important to have friends outside of school as it is to have friends inside school.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
