15 Truths About Long-Distance Friendships
Elisabeth Niebuhr

Our best friends have been there for us through thick and thin and come into our lives at different times. whether that be during childhood or within the last couple of months. Our friendships and time spent together helps us make countless memories to enrich our lives. As time passes and we grow up, we sometimes have to separate. We may live in another town an hour way or in a completely different state or country. Despite that gap in distance and time, we still hold our relationships dear. If your friendship ever does become long distance, here are some truths.

1. Separation will be tough.

You've been so used to seeing and spending time together, that not being able to makes the distance more difficult.

2. Breaking shared routines will be a challenge.

You will have the urge to get ready together for events, go on late night walks, binge watch Netflix and eat mac n cheese. All of the things you did together on a regular basis, you will want to do. It may not be possible and/or it won’t be the same.

3. Reminiscing on good times will happen often.

Thinking back on pranks, late night conversations, family, and parties will you make you incredibly happy.

4. Thinking back to harder times will happen too.

Chances are you won’t just think about the good times. You will think about fights that might have moved you apart at first, but ended up bringing you closer together. Or you will remember their support through the loss of family and friends, or hard times that your family doesn’t even know about.

5. Realization of all the roles they have played in your life.

Besides your family, your best friend has been your comforter, supporter, cheerleader, inspiration, motivation, and kick in the butt when you are down. They have helped you in an abundance of ways, and sometimes you don’t think about it until they aren’t there all the time.

6. Hearing from them is one of the best things that can happen.

From texting, to skyping, or talking on the phone, hearing from them makes your day better no matter what. Talking to them provides a tremendous amount of happiness, normality, and comfort. Perhaps, maybe more than it has before.

7. The next best thing from talking to them, is actually seeing them.

When the time comes to see them again, it’ll feel better than it ever has. Life starts to feel normal when you’re together again. It is one of the best feelings in the world, and you’ll never want to part.

8. Time will fly when you are together.

As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun. Being reunited is the best thing since sliced bread and you will have loads of fun. With all of the catching up, it's easy to lose track of time.

9. You will treasure everything that happens when you’re reunited.

Because you have spent time apart, everything will be that much more special. From the hugs and laughs you share, to the activities you do. Being together holds more importance than ever before.

10. Saying goodbye and/or ending the call will be the hardest.

After talking with and/or seeing them again, it is hard to say goodbye. It will be okay, but it will take time to adjust once again.

11. The longer you are apart, the more normal it will feel.

As time passes, you will get used to being apart. It may not feel right to accept it, but it’s a fact of growing up. You will have your own routines, meet new people, and so on. You will find a new normal, and it will be okay.

12. You will slowly start to find out more about yourself.

You will find new hobbies and interests. Having the space may give you more opportunity to learn more about yourself than before.

13. As time passes and things change, so will you, but it won’t change how close you are.

You have been friends for this long and you will always care about each other. The distance will (hopefully) strengthen your friendship.

14. Your gratefulness for all of their time, love, memories, and support will continue to grow.

Distance can hurt or harm relationships, but you will treasure your friendship so much more. You will use this opportunity to be grateful for all the things they have given to and shared with you.

15. You will feel ever more blessed for having them in your life.

To all of the best friends who are separated by time and space, thank you for everything.

Life would not be as amazing without you!

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about.
