15 Things You Know To Be True If You Went To Brookfield High School

1. The “Go home freshman” chant.

Going into high school, as a freshman, things can sometimes be overwhelming and scary. This did not stop the upperclassman from constantly chanting “Go home freshman” every chance that they could.

2. Bomb Squad.

If you went to Brookfield High School, you know that the school pride is on our sports. Not only do we pride ourselves on the way our teams can play, but also, on our amazing student section known as the “Bomb Squad.” You can bet that if there’s a football or basketball game, the entire school is there to cheer you on. The Bomb Squad is most known for our loud chants, large crowds, lining the stairs before a game, and the most famous of chants being the “I Believe” chant.

3. Homecoming dance.

At almost every high school, the homecoming dance is a formal event where everyone has dates, pretty dresses, and the guys wear suits. But, if you went to Brookfield High School, you know that this is NOT the way Brookfield's Homecoming dance is.

4. Senior Experience / Senior Project.

While mostly every senior in the country has to stay in school until the school day is over and the year is over, Brookfield is different. Senior experience which allowed all seniors to be dismissed from school at 12:30 p.m., was the best thing they ever started. Also, senior project which allowed all seniors to end school in the month of May replacing it with a project of your choice (which usually consisted of doing nothing).

5. “Where are you supposed to be?”

This was a frequently asked question by all members of the BHS staff. Along with the passes, I’m sure that while roaming the halls trying to get away from class for a few minutes, you were always asked “Where are you supposed to be?” by at least one teacher in the hallway.

6. High School parking lot.

It may seem strange to people at other schools but if you went to Brookfield High School you have most definitely met your friends in the high school parking lot and probably hung out with them there.

7. Basketball court.

If you went to BHS, it is guaranteed that at least once in your four years there, or even the years after graduating, you have played a game of basketball on the side court.

8. Everyone knew everything about everyone.

Growing up in a small town and going to a high school where the entire student body adds up to about 1,000 students or less, it’s easy for everyone to know things about each other. Whether you were a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, you basically knew everybody and things about them. If a couple broke up, if a party got busted and someone got in trouble, or even if someone got called out in class, you can guarantee at least 35 people knew about it within the hour that it happened.

9. Table bang.

Every day that there was a football game, you can guarantee that before lunch, there was a table bang.

10. Spirit Week.

At Brookfield High School spirit week isn’t like your ordinary high school spirit week. The student body gets very into spirit week and is without a doubt the most fun week of the year.

11. Flex.

No one ever went. That’s all.

12. Powder puff.

As a freshman and sophomore, you always look forward to the time that you're an upperclassman and get to play in the powder puff game. With the varsity football boys as your coaches, you look forward to enduring the cold temperatures for this match-up between juniors and seniors.

13. Mobil.

At BHS it was normal for students to be late in the morning because they had to stop at the Mobil deli first for a BEC and a drink.

14. The Thirteen Year Club.

Being in the thirteen year club meant that you went through all thirteen years of school through the Brookfield school systems. In my year of graduating, over half of the grade was in the thirteen year club. This meant that we all have known each other for our entire lives. We went through Elementary School together, Middle School together, and High School together which created a close-knit group of kids.

15. You loved your time there and wouldn’t trade your four years and the memories you made there for anything.

Brookfield High School is truly a one-of-a-kind school and I am so lucky that I got to go there, make the friends that I made, met some of the most incredible teachers, and had the time of my life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
