I am a proud Hispanic. Anytime someone admires my hair, my way of speaking, or my family, I feel pride, but there are also some things that bother me. These mostly come from people who feel that, to make conversation with me, they have to ask certain questions. Here are 15 things that you should never ask, say or do to a Hispanic.
1. Don't call every Latino "Mexican."
Yes, Mexico is a huge country with many people, but it is not the only Latin country. Shocking, right?
2. Don't ask if we speak "Mexican."
Believe it or not, I've gotten asked that. Mexican is not a language, it's a culture. I think the word you are looking for is "Spanish."
3. Where did you learn to speak English?
I was born here, fool. I know how to speak English
4. So, where are you really from?
What answer are you expecting? I was born here in Texas.
5. Please don't ask if I am "legal."
*Sigh*
6. Why are you so loud?
I. AM. NOT. LOUD. OKAY?
7. Can you recommend an "authentic" Latin Resturant?
I'm not Yelp, but Chipotle is around the corner.
8. I'm learning Spanish, can you speak to me in Spanish?
No.
9. Can I come to your cousin's Quince? I want to meet your crazy aunts and uncles.
This is a question that has annoyed generations of Latinos. You'll come if Iask you to.
10. Don't ask if I can dance Salsa, Bachata, or Merengue.
Learning to dance is not something that we learn in finishing school.
11. Don't say we are too dark or too white to be Hispanic.
There is such thing as diversity, you know
12. Have you heard J-Lo's new song?
What you think, that because I'm Hispanic that I automatically listen to J-Lo?
13. Do you watch novelas/stories?
Yes, now get out of the way; you're blocking the TV.
14. Don't make up a new name for us because it is "easier to pronounce."
I haven't personally had this happen to me — my name is easy to pronounce — but it happens to others.
15. Do you speak English?
YES. I was born here.
