15 Thoughts We Have Going Back To UIUC
Shelley Frankel

1. Moving in early is definitely the right decision.

Everyone knows the first days back to school are for nothing but a good time.

2. I can't wait to see all of my friends who don't live in Illinois.

Although much of UIUC is north shore suburban kids, a large amount are from across the country, or even across the world. The best part is knowing you have a place to visit, and stories to hear.

3. Yik-Yak better be on its A-game this semester.

Hearing about parties, or guys confessing their love for a girl they saw on the street, the UIUC Yik-Yak game is usually on point; let's keep it that way, shall we.

4. What ElSE can I join this year?

Schoolwork, Greek life, and working isn't enough. We all want our resumes to stand out and we could care less about time management, it's all about what else we can get ourselves involved in. Who's up for the squirrel watching club?

5. Must. Feed. A. Squirrel.

Speaking of squirrels, honestly, who doesn't want to grab one and take it home? Just don't ask if the mascot counts, because it doesn't and that would just be weird.

6. I wonder if I can try my fake ID again this year.

Try, and try again. Never EVER give up. Amiright?

7. Can't wait to relearn the bus system.

Yellowhopper north? What's that again ...

8. I can stay out past 12 a.m.!

When we're at home, we have parents to report to and curfews to make. At school, bars don't even close until 2 a.m., who's living the good life now, huh parents?

9. What songs are the bells going to pay this year?

Whatever it may be, it'll get the campus talking, per usual.

10. I can't wait until my night favorite of the week, wine night.

$8 for a bottle of wine and an amazing time, who even cares about 8 a.m. classes the next day?

11. I will make it on the Illinois snap story this year.

It's almost as difficult as the Chicago story, but this is THE year.

12. If the teachers strike again, I'd like all classes to be canceled.

My friends got to miss like a week of school, shouldn't we all get to at that point? Come on.

13. I need to make sure I have enough money for both cover and drinks this year.

14. Which bar should I start at?

UIUC has some of the best bars out there, the question becomes, where can I get the most lit?

15. I can't wait to have the best semester yet.

We go to one of the best schools in the country, going back couldn't be any more exciting. Make the best of it!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
