15 Things You Know To Be True If You Go To A Small College

Going to a small college is a blessing and a curse. You know so many people, it's easy to get around your small campus and you're on a first-name basis with your professors. It has its ups and it definitely has its downs, but you love your little school nonetheless.

1. There is no such thing as skipping a class.

When you go to a small college, you basically are the class, so when you don't show up your professors know and may even call you out on it the next day.

2. Is sleeping in class an actual thing?

At a small college, there is no sitting in the back of a classroom and getting sleep. The classrooms are small and the professors see everything.

3. Texting is also out of the question.

If your professor doesn't allow you to have your phone out in class, it definitely isn't going to happen.

4. You run into your friends or the person you like all the time.

It's actually kind of nice to run into people you like, well, unless you're having a bad hair day or didn't have time to look cute that morning.

5. You also will run into people you don't like.

Running into people you like is one thing, but you will run into people you don't like all the time. It's actually pretty terrible.

7. You may or may not have football.

Isn't it a sin to live in the south and not have football? Or something like that?

8. What's a tailgate?

No football, no tailgate. Simple as that.

9. You're probably stuck in a town that doesn't have much to do.

The most fun you have is your weekly trip to Walmart.

10. The dating pool is extremely small, almost non-existent.

And he's probably dated or talked to one of your friends, so he's off-limits.

11. You know your president and your president knows you.

12. You've gotten used to people not knowing where your school is.

Your conversations probably go something like this, "I go to ____." "Oh that's cool. Where is that again?"

13. You are probably in more than one club.

It's a small campus, so if you're involved you're probably in more than one club.

14. Everyone will know your business.

15. Talking to friends at big universities will make you jealous.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
