There is no arguing that there have been some terrible things going on in our country lately. First, people in a club in Orlando were victims of a senseless mass shooting. Hillary Clinton was not charged by the FBI for any of her illegal actions, and she is still in the running for President. An African American man was shot by two police officers in Baton Rouge, as well as others who were shot in other states across the country. After this, police began being gunned down with an attack on the Dallas Police Department, as well as shootings in Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee. There was even a rumor that a riot was going to take place in my very own city, Monroe, Louisiana. I am not naïve enough to believe that racism does not exist in this country. I am not naïve enough to believe that there are not bad cops out there. I do know that there are many hardworking cops that are only doing their job to protect others that are having their name dragged through the mud because of the actions of few. I do know that there can be peaceful protests and that the Black Lives Matter protest was not created to be violent. I do know that there are white people that are outraged at an injustice against blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and all minorities when they see one because they are not racist. We should not be tearing each other apart. We need help. This country was founded on freedom. I'm not saying everyone needs to gather around a campfire and sing Kumbaya and ignore the problems that face us in this country, but we do need to realize that tearing each other down is only perpetuating the problem. We need to come together to start helping fix the country. Stop planning where you're going to "move to", and start trying to put the broken pieces of America together. Start spreading love and not hate. Little things soon build up to amount to big things. Below are fifteen little things you can do in your town to start fixing America and spread love.
1. Help Someone Carry Groceries To Their Car
2. Pay For Someone Else's Meal At Waffle House
3. Find Opportunities To Give Compliments
4. Offer To Mow Your Neighbor's Lawn
5. Give Your Waiter An Extra $1 In Their Tip
6. Help Someone Replace Their Flat Tire
7. Let Someone Skip You In Line At Walmart, Starbucks, etc.
8. Give Your Seat Up For An Elderly Person
9. Put Change In An Expired Parking Meter
10. Take Clothes To A Homeless Shelter
11. Offer To Share Your Umbrella With Someone
12. Babysit For A Single Parent For Free
13. Make Friends With Someone New
14. Always Say Thank You
15. Smile, Be Polite, And Respect Others
I'm not trying to make light of any of the situations described above. They are absolutely terrible, but they will not stop unless we stop them. It seems the time of respecting others is gone. Treat others the way you want to be treated. I know that the fifteen simple things above will not magically fix all of the bigger issues facing our country, but they are a start. Great things are done by a series of small things brought together. We may not be able to fix the big problems alone, but we should come together and spread kindness instead of tearing each other apart for things to get better. Choose love, not hate.
