We're at that point in winter where getting out of bed is becoming harder and harder every day, especially when you look out your window and see nothing but snow and hear nothing but the harsh wind. Here are some of the best movies and TV shows Netflix has to offer for the next time you're doing nothing but staying in with some hot chocolate and not a single care in the world.
1. Good Will Hunting (1997)
For those who have been living under a rock all these years, but also for those who just love the genius work of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and especially for those who miss the talented Robin Williams. Matt Damon plays the title character Will Hunting, a mathematical genius with some demons to overcome. Funny, but also beautiful and heartwarming.
2. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" gets a modern-day twist: Kat and Bianca are sisters; Bianca is sweet, Kat . . . not so much. Watch this movie and marvel at the trends of the late 90s, as well as young Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Julia Stiles.
3. Clueless (1995)
If you're not going to watch this movie for it's hilarious portrayal of Beverly Hills rich kids in the mid-90s, at least watch it for young Paul Rudd.
4. The Shining (1980)
Based off the popular horror novel by Stephen King, this psychological horror film focuses on a family stranded at a hotel during a snowstorm and how a demonic presence there with them slowly possess the father's mind.
5. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Set on an island off the coast of New England, two 12-year-olds fall in love and run away from home during the summer of 1965. As various authorities search for them, a violent storm is brewing not far away. This visually stunning movie by Wes Anderson is the perfect mix of quirky, humorous, and sweet.
6. Dope (2015)
A 90s-loving genius and his two best friends try their hand at selling drugs in a rough California neighborhood. Super funny, and super cool.
7. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Three film students get lost in the woods searching for a legendary witch. This "found footage" film was a box office success and considered to be one of the scariest movies made.
8. Magic Mike (2012)
Watch this movie if you've never seen it, or if you love Channing Tatum, or if you're just feeling purely self-indulgent.
9. Stranger Things (2016)
Watching this show in a single day is entirely possible, if you're wondering, since I did it. If you like sci-fi thrillers, the 80s and Winona Ryder, this is the show for you. The show is returning for Season 2 on Halloween, so binge it now and be ready!
10. Black Mirror (2011-)
I've often heard of this show described as a "futuristic Twilight Zone." Each episode has its own separate plot, but they all focus on technology and how it can make or break our future society. Watch this if you're in the mood to have your mind blown and your entire world rocked.
11. A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017-)
The onscreen adaption that the books truly deserved. Each book is split into two episodes, and you'll love the dry humor and fantastic special effects, as well as Neil Patrick Harris nailing the role of the evil Count Olaf.
12. Bob's Burgers (2011-)
Honestly, I've never met anyone who isn't a fan of this hilarious animation. This show focuses on the Belchers and their family burger restaurant. Each character has their own unique but lovable personality, and the crazy shenanigans they get into each episode are fun to watch.
13. Californication (2007-2014)
David Duchovny returns to TV as the alcoholic, womanizing novelist Hank Moody who moves to California and tries to beat his writer's block. This show takes "sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll" extremely literally.
14. The Get Down (2016-)
This show is set in the late 1970s and focuses on the rise of hip hop, told by a group of young people in the South Bronx. Baz Luhrmann, who is responsible for both "Moulin Rouge" and "The Great Gatsby," certainly doesn't disappoint with this one either. The cast is all PoC and the music and energy is infectious.
15. The Office (2005-2013)
But seriously, is it a real binge-day if you haven't watched at least a few episodes of this classic? Set in Scranton, Pennsylvania, this mockumentary records the everyday lives of the unique employees of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company and their unconventional boss, Michael Scott. If you haven't watched this show yet, do yourself a favor.
So here are 15 shows and movies for your next binge-day! All of them can be found on Netflix and all of them are worth watching. Happy bingeing!
