15 Things To Do In Summer Of 2016
Kaylin Ochs

Hooray! Summer of 2016 is finally here. No more sitting in the classroom all day, and spending hours on hours doing homework. It's time to get out and about, and live life to the fullest. Summer to me is always about trying new things, and getting out of your comfort zone. We're given 3 months of freedom, and it's our job to make them count. Memories are meant to be made and it starts right now. Here are 15 things you can do this summer, in result in having a successful break.

1. Beach fire/ Bonfire!

This is just sort of a given. Having a fire is like a required summer activity. Every year it should begin, and end with one. Get together with friends, grab some drinks, food, and have fun! It's a great way to get everyone together and make some memories.

2. Play Beach Volleyball!

Where I'm from beach volleyball is huge. There are leagues everywhere and anywhere. It's a great activity, whether it's in a league or a pickup game. No matter what, you're always guaranteed a fun time.

3. Go to an Outdoor Concert!

Summer is meant for outdoor concerts. If you're lucky, the weather will be nice, and you'll find yourself getting tan at the same time. Every summer, I go to as many concerts as I can. It's one of my favorite past times. So grab somebody and go!Good friends, great music, and nice weather, how can you not enjoy yourself?

4. Go on a Road Trip Adventure!

Pick a place on the map, and drive baby drive. Summer is the perfect time to pick someplace you've never gone before and explore. Life is so short, and there are so many beautiful places in the world. Whether it's 20 minutes or 20 hours away, do yourself a favor and do it, just do it.

5. Build a Sandcastle!

As little-kiddish as it sounds, I love building sand castles. I think it's fun, and now that I'm older, I can take it a little more serious. It's fun to get creative, and create a masterpiece.

6. Go Cliff Jumping / Skinny Dipping!

This is something I've always wanted to do, but have been so scared of! I know it's scary, but face your fears like me! I know I will be doing that this summer. If you don't live around a cliff to go jumping, go skinny dipping. I've never done this and as weird as it sounds I wanna try it. I think it would be so freeing! Summer is nothing without making a splash, so no matter where you are, get in the water!

7. Go to an Amusement Park!

I love going on rides! Roller coasters are scary as can be, but so much fun! Grab some friends and go to your nearest park. If you're lucky, yours might even have some waterslides as well. A good way to soak in the sun and get wet too.

8. Go Hiking and Camping!

I love hiking and taking in the beautiful sites. Why not add camping in there as well? Find a campground, and then go explore!

9. Go to a Movie in the Park!

If you're lucky, you may have a drive-in movie theater. And if you do, I'm completely jealous. Although, movies in the park are a common thing too, and so much fun. Pack a backpack full of goodies and spend the night watching a classic film outdoors.

10. Have a Barbecue!

Summer is the perfect time to grill outside. Get a couple steaks, and enjoy them while eating on the patio. It's an awesome way for people to come together and celebrate the good weather.

11. Go Mudding!

I really wanna go Mudding this summer. Whether it's four wheeling or in somebody's truck, I think it'd be a blast. And it's always fun to get a little dirty.

12. Get on the Lake!

Some how, some way, get on the lake. Go boating, go tubing, go fishing, enjoy the beautiful view. I'm lucky enough to live on a lake and I'll never take a single day for granted. The beautiful scenery of the sunset and sunrise gets me every time.

13. Tan, tan, tan, and tan some more!

I don't know about you, but I love when my skin gets a nice dark color. It's always nice just to lay out, relax, and enjoy the warm weather. Whether it's in your backyard or at the beach, enjoy every second of it.

14. Spend Time with Family!

Spending time with family is always nice. It's hard during the school year because we're always so busy. Spend time catching up and see what's new in their lives.

15. Go to New Restaurants!

Last summer my best friend and I went somewhere new each week to eat. We found some great places that we never knew existed! It was nice to take the time to eat new foods and learn about places we didn't know we're there.

Although some of these are pretty basic, it's always fun to check things off a list and feel accomplished! I hope everyone who reads this has a fabulous summer, and makes it one to be remembered. Summer of 2016, let's get it started!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
