15 Things RAs Want For Christmas This Year

What kind of gift can a person get for that friend who's an RA?

So, you survived the first half of the academic year as an RA. Naturally, one of the most persistent things on your mind is how you can step up your game for the spring semester. You're familiar with your residents, you're comfortable with your building, and you've found a good balance between classes, extra-curriculars and time with friends. You've learned and grown this semester, and you're pretty exhausted. Needless to say, winter break is a blessing. You've been so busy, you haven't thought about what you want for Christmas, have you? Well, if your parents aren't sure what to get you, you might want to add these super important items to your Christmas list.

1. A lifetime supply of staples for all my bulletin boards

My bulletin boards don't put themselves up!

2. A boyfriend to bring dinner and coffee while you're on duty

Because I always realize I should have made a Dunkin Donuts run after I get back to my building and can't leave.

3. If a boyfriend doesn't seem attainable: gift cards to restaurants that deliver.

*Eats pizza in my building's office.*

4. Headphones.

That way, I don't have to pretend I didn't hear someone knocking. I probably just won't hear it. (Only use when you're studying or super exhausted - don't ignore your residents.)

5. A clip-on reading lamp

So then I can read in the dark - and if someone can tell by looking under my door that the lights are out, they're less likely to knock (in most cases, at least).

6. For everyone in my building to remember their keys

Santa is sitting in the North Pole thinking, "I just make toys, I'm not a miracle worker, okay???"

7. Bulletin board paper cut out to be the exact same size as the board in my hallway.

It would save so much time (and sweat).

8. One of those door signs from hotels that says "Do Not Disturb"

This needs no explanation! We all need time to ourselves.

9. To not have to take away any string lights during fire safety checks before winter break.

String lights can make a room look cozy and warm (if you don't believe me, check Pinterest), but you know what else is warm? Fires.

10. For people to stop telling me I look tired when I am already highly aware that I am tired.

If I look like the morning after it's most likely because someone called the duty phone at 4 in the morning.

11. No more loud music after quiet hours.

We can jam to Drake another time (before 1 a.m., preferably).

12. A new ringtone for the duty cell phone.

Because I keep having dreams where I hear the duty phone ringtone in the middle of the night (what's even scarier is that sometimes, it's actually happening).

13. For my friends to stop making plans while I'm on duty

"Come visit me after you get back."

14. A little more free time

Winter break just isn't a long enough time to be free of all my responsibilities.

15. Just a little more sleep

This is very important. Santa, Mom, Dad, friends - please take note of this.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
