Your 20s are all about being able to differentiate between right and wrong, morally correct and incorrect, and having the mental capability to be able to differentiate between all four. There are also a lot of things we couldn’t do before turning 20 and once we finally reached the much-acclaimed age, it was a race to do all those things.
1. Your major doesn’t define who you are. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve switched back and forth from a B.S. in Biology to English to a B.A. in Biology and back. College is just that - being able to explore the millions of possibilities laid out for students who know what they want out of their college career and for those of us who find it necessary to go through the motions to find where they’ll feel the most “fulfilled” by their choice of a major.
2. Your college major also doesn’t represent your worth to your parents. Coming from a rather traditional Muslim family, it was expected of my sisters and I to perform to our utmost potential. Having said this, my parent’s viewpoints on what major was “the best” was fogged and throughout the years of growing older, it’s become more and more clear to them. Any parent just wants what’s best for his or her child, no matter what their end result is and this won’t change just because one wants to pursue a major in the arts or the sciences, even if it’s the absence of any major at all.
3. The math and sciences in school will also become even more difficult as you grow older.
4. Contrary to popular belief, your first “random hookup” in college won’t be your last.
5. Don’t treat said “random hookup” like it’ll be your last. Rookie mistake.
6. The friendships you’ve formed throughout your college career thus far will be long lasting, no matter what. Whether or not they’re friends that you no longer speak to or friendships that have only became stronger through the years, the memories that have been formed throughout time will be everlasting.
7. Transitioning from a Singleton Sally to a Relationship Rosie is accompanied with a lot of changes. An important change includes having an extra individual in your life to be responsible for, more or less. Whether you like it or not, there is another person besides friends and family, whose feelings are going to have to be taken account for in any given situation involving them.
8. Your first “I love you” will mean the most. Personally, from only having said the four letter word to close friends and family, to say it to a person that is neither of these things, is a beautiful feeling.
9. It’s necessary to be able to balance your time between your close knit friend group and significant other in college.
10. More often times than not, girlfriends come first, significant other second (sorry Dan).
11. It’s incredibly easy to forgo taking care of your health and it’s even easier to forget about keeping up with any sort of workout regime. This same workout regime will be one of the lesser things in life to keep you sane in the midst of paper deadlines and midterms.
12. I know a lot of people say this, but your relationship with your parents will prosper into something more and more beautiful as you grow older.
13. Your mother is your go-to woman, your right hand man, your best friend.
14. The older you get, the less likely you are to be participating in “25 cent beer Tuesdays” and “wine down Wednesdays”.
15. Sometimes it’s okay to still celebrate “25 cent beer Tuesdays” and “wine down Wednesdays”.
Cheers to being 20.
