If you're currently in college, or you're on the other side of it, you know these are the years hold a lot of self-discovery. You learn so much about yourself when you're thrown into the world of college alone. And yes, there are life-changing moments hand heavy lessons to learn when you're at your home away from home. But even more so, college teaches you about the little everyday choices, like what to eat for breakfast, how many hours of sleep you need to actually be a kind person, and where to buy the cheapest toilet paper. So here are 15 short and simple tips that being a college freshman has taught me:

1. Be spontaneous.

Whether it's going for an ice cream run or taking a road trip for Spring Break, just go for it. You'll be glad you did.

2. Talk to people in your classes.

Believe it or not, most of your classmates are looking for friends too.

3. Ditch the Starbucks run, and make coffee at home.

Even if it means sacrificing a temporary caffeine fix, you'll be happy when you have a little extra cash to do something fun with your friends.

4. Read the textbook.

It takes a long time on the front end, but you end up being more prepared and less stressed before the test.

5. Take notes with paper and a pen, not your laptop.

Even though it takes a little bit longer, it's proven that you retain more information this way.

6. Thank your parents.

Even if you're paying for your gas and groceries, your parents are probably still paying for a whole lot of your expenses right now. Make sure you let them know how much you appreciate it!

7. Make use of the free gym membership.

When you're paying such a hefty athletic fee, you might as well make use of it. Plus, this is the perfect time to try different things and find that one workout that you absolutely love.

8. Don’t watch Netflix in the morning.

Just don't do it. You'll be more productive if you save your binge watching for the evening.

9. Eat your veggies.

All those Waffle House and Starbucks runs aren't going to cut it for your long-term health. Make sure you are fueling your body now. You'll thank yourself later.

10. Don’t be afraid of a B.

Even if you're an A student, you're going to be just fine if your GPA doesn't quite reach a 4.0. I promise.

11. Make simple meals

It's cheaper, easier, and faster that way.

12. Get eight hours of sleep as often as possible.

You'll be a lot nicer if you don't pull too many all-nighters. Falling asleep in class is not recommended.

13. Get a study buddy.

You'll be way more inspired to ace that test if you've got someone doing it right alongside you.

14. Take the time to visit your high school friends.

Yes, you'll meet plenty of new people in college, but there's something special about the friendships you've had for a long time. Make them a priority.

15. Enjoy every moment.

Sometimes you won't want to be where you are because, honestly, no college is perfect. Make the most of the time you have there, and live every moment to the fullest.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
