Being a choir kid is an interesting and entertaining experience-- even more so when you're in chorus as a class, where the concerts are the majority of your grade and where you all still show up even if the conductor/teacher is absent.
There are many aspects of being a chorus student that only fellow chorus students will understand, and I've compiled a list of them here:
1. "This concert is your final grade, and your only excuse for missing it is if you're puking your guts up or somebody has died."
Truth.
2. When you've been in a choir for years and still can't sightread well.
💁🏻
3. That one soprano that can't blend with the rest of the sopranos to save her life.
There's one in every choir. Every now and then, you get an alto that belts too.
4. When in doubt, blame the tenors.
5. That glorious moment when the choir is going to sing a song you already know and love.
6. Joining the theatre kids in an epic mashup of the arts known as the spring musical.
A tradition like no other.
7. The rare song in which the altos get the melody.
8. Your conductor/teacher is the funniest person you know.
And also the wittiest, and most long-suffering person you've ever met.
9. When you've been one part for years, then your new choir teacher places you in a different section.
It's okay though, because you usually learn to love it as much as the old one after a while.
10. Warm-ups.
Which probably seem bizarre to outsiders, are a natural part of your daily routine.
11. Chorus is your favorite class.
Despite how hard it can be at times, because you love music-- and you love the people you get to sing with even more.
12. Cheesy choir jokes.
Such as this one: "How many altos does it take to change a light bulb? None. They can't get up that high."
13. Your section leader is either your favorite or your most despised person in the choir.
There is no in-between.
14. Subconsciously trying to harmonize with every song you hear outside of class.
15. Only realizing once you've moved on how much you miss your choir.
Your conductor/teacher, and the opportunity you had to make music with people.
Shoutout to the Station Camp High School Select Choir-- you guys were the best, and I'm so grateful to have been a part of this group throughout high school. Mr. Collins, thank you for being amazing and for all the lessons you taught me, about both music and life itself. I miss you all!
