As a Chinese girl who grew up in America in the South, I've pretty much heard it all. Every Asian joke, every stereotype, and every question about my heritage. Really, I've never been offended, since most jokes are harmlessly innocent and truly all in good fun. So in the spirit of good fun, here are some of my personal favorite things that a non-Asian person has ever said to me on being Asian:
1. "Your eyes are really big for an Asian person's!"
Thank you?
2. "So like, which kind of Asian are you?"
There are other Asian countries besides Korea, Japan, and China.
3. "Can you say my name in Asian?"
Asian isn't a language, and even if it was; sorry, no I cannot translate "Caroline" or "James" for you.
4. "Can you use chopsticks?"
Surprisingly enough, I can't.
5. "Do your parents really want you to be a doctor?"
6. "You're probably like, really good at math."
7. "Is your mom a tiger mom?"
Do you even know what you're talking about?!
8. "I bet you're a really bad driver."
Rude. But disclaimer: I really am a pretty bad driver.
9. "What's your Asian name?"
Probably something you'll have a difficult time pronouncing.
10. "Can you say *insert literally any phrase or word here* in your language?"
11. "Hey, are you in orchestra?"
12. "Will your parents be mad if you date someone who's not Asian?"
I think they'll survive.
13. "Wow, it's so amazing that your mom doesn't have an accent!"
Is it really that amazing?
14. "Hey, what does that Asian sign say?"
Contrary to what you might think, not every Asian person can read or write in every Asian language.
15. "All Asian people just look the same to me."
May I present to you:
