With the start of each summer comes warm weather, sun and plenty of fun activities. One of my favorite parts of summer is the plethora of movies that come out (and the fact that you can watch them two for the price of one at the drive ins). It seems like studios wait to unveil their most anticipated films for this time and it makes for a pretty exciting couple of months. This summer will most likely prove to be interesting as it is filled with lots of highly anticipated sequels. Though I'm sure most people are prepared for the release of their chosen few flicks, here are the ones I'm particularly excited for (in order of release dates).
1. Captain America: Civil War (May 6th)
This movie might have already come out, but it's on the list to tell you to go see it if you haven't already! It is an amazing film, with lots of laughs and great action scenes, and it totally lives up to the hype. It is definitely the first major summer blockbuster and it kicks off the season right!
2. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (May 20th)
A sequel to the 2014 comedy starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, this one seems like it will be as funny if not funnier than the first. Though it is definitely not the most sophisticated humor, Seth Rogen and the physical jokes in the movie are definitely worth a few laughs and any movie that provides a shirtless dancing scene from Zac Efron is worth my money.
3. Alice Through the Looking Glass (May 27th)
The first movie in this series was a fun and well done remaking of the classic remaking, and this sequel looks to be just as exciting. A bit of advice, these movies are best viewed in 3D in the theater.
4. X Men Apocalypse (May 27th)
Another much anticipated sequel for the summer, if you are interested in superhero movies or even if you aren't, if it is as good as the previous X Men prequels it will certainly be worth the money to see it in the theater.
5. Me Before You (June 3rd)
This is possibly the movie I am looking forward to the most this summer. It is definitely not as much of a blockbuster as some of the other films on this list but if it is half as good as the book it is based on (which I highly recommend), it will definitely be worth your time. Make sure to bring an entire box of tissues, you will need them!
6. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (June 3rd)
I am a big fan of Andy Samberg and since he has been busy with his popular TV show and many other projects it has been a while since we have seen him starring on the big screen. This movie looks to be funny and pretty silly, and it will be nice lighthearted option after crying your eyes out during Me Before You.
7. Conjuring 2: The Endfield Experience (June 10th)
I enjoy a good scary movie, but finding one often requires watching a lot of corny or uninteresting ones. That being said, The Conjuring was one of the most terrifying and surprising movies I have seen in a while and I look forward to the sequel.
8. Now You See Me 2 (June 10th)
The first Now You See Me was interesting, cool, and highly underrated. If you never got around to seeing it, I highly recommend you do so, and then you most certainly will be unable to resist seeing it's follow up.
9. Finding Dory (June 17th)
The LONG anticipated (emphasis on long) follow up to the 2003 Pixar classic Finding Nemo. I am sure the movie theaters will be filled with children and adults alike looking forward to watching this movie.
10. The Purge: Election Year (July 1st)
The third in this series of films, it has the potential to be quite good after seeing the improvements made between The Purge and The Purge 2 (was a much bigger fan of the second as opposed to the first). These movies are creepy and pretty terrifying, and I expect this one to be equally so with its relevance (making it an election year was no mistake).
11. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (July 8th)
Starring funny man Adam Devine and Zac Efron (I stated above why I appreciate his presence in movies) this one seems like it will be a good one to catch. I look forward to Anna Kendrick playing a bad girl in the film and the humor that Aubrey Plaza (of Parks and Rec fame) will bring to it as well.
12. Ghostbusters (July 15th)
As spin on the classic film, this time we have a group of women fighting off the supernatural forces in NYC. I can't wait to see what Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig will bring to the table and look forward to seeing an update of the great original movie.
13. Bad Moms (July 29th)
A star studded female cast, featuring Mila Kunis, Christina Applegate, and Kristen Bell, that will try to show that women can still be hilarious and fun at any age, I think this movie will be a great one to catch.
14. Suicide Squad (August 5th)
Another superhero movie (well technically, supervillain) that has the potential to be a major blockbuster. After the so/so performance of Batman v. Superman, DC comics is looking to make a comeback with this one. I think it has a ton of potential that I look forward to seeing first hand in the theater.
15. War Dogs (August 19th)
Based on a true story that almost seems too crazy to be believable, I think this movie will prove to be both hilarious and interesting, and I look forward to seeing Miles Teller and Jonah Hill work together.
There are many other movies coming out in the next couple of months, but these are the ones I will most likely be heading out to see. Though you might not be willing to shell out the cost of seeing 15 movies in the span of 3 months, I hope this list refreshes your memory or lets you know firsthand about any films you know you can't miss seeing. Now get some popcorn, soda, and your friends together and set a date to see some summer blockbusters!
