Breakups suck. Moving on is even harder. You go through multiple phases of grieving-- denial, sadness, bargaining, anger, and eventually acceptance. It's hard to face the fact that it is really over. But once you've reached the acceptance, you realize that it's no longer time for sad songs.
I provided a list here of 15 songs to listen to when you're over the sad phase. Some are old, and some are new, but they all play a part in moving on. I know they definitely helped me, and hopefully, they'll help you too!
1. We Are Never Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift
Even though this song is by "the old Taylor Swift," it is pure gold. It's easy to sing along to (You catch on to the chorus pretty quickly!) and dance to. Plus, it makes you feel so much better about the relationship ending (FOR GOOD!) this time.
2. Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson was a true inspiration and icon in the early 2000's. Everyone knows this song. This song will never die.
3. New Rules by Dua Lipa
As a newer song, this is played on the radio all the time. It is probably one of the best songs for moving on, as it reminds you of your worth. When Dua Lipa says not to pick up the phone, you best not pick up the phone.
4. You're Such A by Hailee Steinfeld
This song is perfect for when you realize just how terrible your ex is/was. I didn't know about this song for a while, but I am so glad I found it. Plus, Hailee Steinfeld is all about girl power, so you really can't go wrong with that!
5. Shout Out to My Ex by Little Mix
This song should go down in history as one of the best songs to listen to after a break up ever. The more you listen to it, the more you start to believe you're actually getting over it. It also takes a look at the more positive side of breaking up-- like how much better and confident you are without your ex.
6. IDGAF by Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa makes her second appearance on this list because her music is just that good for breaking up and moving on (you should really give her whole album a listen). This is another classic "I'm better off without you" type song that is so much fun to dance around to.
7. Sorry Not Sorry by Demi Lovato
Of course, this song should also be listened to on repeat after a breakup. Demi Lovato created a real masterpiece with this one. It's easy to sing along to and it makes you feel like a bomb ass bitch who deserves the best.
8. I Look So Good (Without You) by Jessie James
Jessie James, now Jessie James Decker, is fairly underrated. As more of a country song, this is a lesser known moving on song. Upon listening to it for the first time, it inspired me to change my tear-drenched shirt into a flashy shirt and made me feel so good about myself.
9. Same Old Love by Selena Gomez
This song is perfect for that stage where you finally realize, "hey, maybe I do deserve better" and actually put yourself out there again. You finally realize you deserve better love.
10. Miss Movin' On by Fifth Harmony
This song is literally exactly as it's called. Tell everyone to call you Miss Movin' On from here on out. (Throwback to 5 girls in Fifth Harmony...)
11. Part of Me by Katy Perry
A classic Katy Perry song that will never get old. It's just a reminder to not ever let those boys take any part of you.
12. Hair by Little Mix
Ah yes, another Little Mix song. As a girl group focused on lifting others up, this song is another necessity that will make you dance around in your room, alone or with your girls.
13. Stronger by Britney Spears
As an older Britney Spears song, this could be called a classic. It is a song that will make you feel confident, happier, and stronger, pun intended.
14. Fighter by Christina Aguilera
This song reminds you that no matter what happens in life, you will get through it. Just like this breakup, it will only make you more prepared for what's to come. (This gif is not from the music video, but it is one of my favorites!)
15. Bye Bye Bye by *NSYNC
Last but not least, I had to include this song. It is a true classic and guaranteed to make you feel better. You can sing to it, dance to it, drink to it, literally anything. And on that note, bye bye bye!
