I can honestly say that punk-rock is my all-time favorite type of music. My middle school years have never left me, and probably never will. But when I think back on those times, these are some of the songs that especially remind me of my own teen angst.
1. "Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off" by Panic! At The Disco (2005)
I may be the world's biggest Panic! At The Disco fan, so out of principle I thought putting "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" on this list would just be too overplayed. But in this era of Panic!, they had awesomely long song names that made you hate typing it into LimeWire to illegally find. Also, can we mention that they wrote and produced this album when they were only 18 years old? Anyway, this is one of Panic!'s classics, and you would scribble lyrics like "I've got more wit, a better, kiss, a hotter touch, a better f**k" or "you know it will always just be me" on the margins of your notebook when your crush liked someone else and wouldn't choose you. You didn't know what testosterone boys or harlequin girls meant exactly, but it just seemed so right. Let's get these teen hearts beating faster, faster.
2. "Kiss My Sass" by Cobra Starship (2007)
Cobra Starship had some lyrics that you weren't sure you were allowed to listen to in front of your parents, but your excuse for this one was "mom, it's not ass, it's sass, God!". This was the song that you showed your parents when they told you everything else was too depressing for you to listen to. Not to mention a nice feature from Travis McCoy when Gym Class Heroes were hot for like a minute. Cobra Starship was bringing sassy back- 'cuz they say that kid, he's got soul.
3. "She's a Lady" by Forever the Sickest Kids (2009)
This was the song that all of the angsty teenage boys sang about the girls that they hated but were dating for the sole purpose of looking cool and having a girlfriend. So what if you were in 8th grade? It was true love. Between sassy lines like "she's attractive, but bitter" and "baby, don't return to me if you think that I'm not worth your time", all the way up to the chorus that you sang at the top of your lungs, this song let you know that she was most definitely a lady, and ladies absolutely shouldn't be messed with.
4. "Seventeen Forever" by Metro Station (2007)
Back in 2007, you weren't sure what this song was really talking about. Even now you're not too sure. But to be honest, this is Metro Station's best song aside from "Kelsey". No matter when you were graduating high school, this became an anthem for your senior class about staying in senior year forever. *Throws head back and laughs.* This song is the definition of sneaky kids; "you won't be seventeen forever, and we can get away with this tonight". But no matter what, when this song came on your speakers from the mix CD you burned for the weekend, the volume was definitely turned all the way up.
5. "A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More 'Touch Me'" by Fall Out Boy (2005)
Panic! At the Disco may be my first love, but Fall Out Boy is the side chick that I secretly sometimes love more. And this track is one of the most underrated on the From Under the Cork Tree album. Actually, it might be one of their most underrated songs ever, followed by "Twenty Dollar Nosebleed". Also, the guyliner on Pete Wentz is actually something I still dream about. And him being a vampire in the music video? So hot. (Also, peep Brendon Urie's cameo as a hot vampire in this music video.) This song just had the right amount of angst that you imagined you singing it to your boyfriend when you were fighting or breaking up. I mean, "I don't blame you for being you, but you can't blame me for hating it"? One of the most iconic song lyrics ever.
6. "Miserable At Best" by Mayday Parade (2007)
This was honestly a toss up between "Miserable At Best" and "Jamie All Over". But in the end, I felt as if this song has a more nostalgic feel. This song brought out so many feels, and you found yourself getting choked up at "I can live without you but without you I'll be miserable at best," because at the most likely age of 14 you knew exactly how they felt.
7. "Ocean Avenue" by Yellowcard (2003)
Within the first few seconds, you already know what song it is. There is no better feeling than driving with your windows down along a beach highway blasting this song. Listening to this song makes you want to go to the place off Ocean Avenue, too. Not to mention, the line "sleeping all day staying up all night" was great for you AIM away message so people knew you were up to some ~mischief~ with your friends.
8. "Check Yes Juliet" by We The Kings (2007)
You listened to this song and wished that this was the type of love the guy you had a crush on and you had. Like, hell yeah, I want you to toss rocks at my window so I can come sneak out with you. 13-year-old you totally thought that was something you could do. This song especially applied if none of your friends liked the guy you were crushing on- "don't say we're not meant to be" was your main argument for their protests. Run, baby, run.
9. "Dear Maria, Count Me In" by All Time Low (2008)
As soon as you heard, "I've got your picture, I'm coming with you, dear Maria count me in," you're already pumped. It is basically required by law to sing this song at the top of your lungs. There is no exception- it's just something you do.Not to mention, the lyrics, "there's a story at the bottom of this bottle and I'm the pen," were just absolutely the perfect touch for the ending of your AIM profile. All Time Low has some amazing songs, but honestly, none of them are as iconic as this one.
10. "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance (2006)
That first musical note hits you right in the feels. It happens, and you know that your day is about to be emotionally fucked up. Probably one of the most depressing songs to date, but it fed your deep, dark soul. Also, blonde Gerard Way with all of that guyliner does things to me emotionally. While listening to this song, you wish you could save all of MCR from the emotional turmoil they must be experiencing. Take me to the Black Parade, MCR!
11. "Cute Without the 'E' (Cut From the Team)" by Taking Back Sunday (2007)
"Your lipstick, his collar, don't bother, Angel, I know exactly what goes on," was such an opening line for a song probably ever. This song screams heartbreak and betrayal. Honestly, the nickname "Angel" is so ironic and sarcastic it's a piece of art. "I know you well enough to know you never love me," and "I stay wrecked and jealous for this, for this simple reason I, just need to keep you in mind as something larger than life,"? Simply amazing. It makes me want to yell at my imaginary boyfriend for cheating on me, too.
12. "If It Means A Lot To You" by A Day To Remember (2009)
A Day To Remember was the band that was just enough screamo for it to be socially acceptable. If you say that this song doesn't still give you the feels, then I'm gonna call you an absolute liar. Not to mention this was the best song to use for a long-distance relationship. Actually, you probably tried to make this song "your song" between you and your significant other. Even though it probably didn't make sense. The lyrics are so sad, but so beautiful. I still cry when I hear it- I'm not ashamed to admit it. La, la, la, bitches.
13. "Girls Do What They Want" by The Maine (2008)
Being an 18-year-old girl at the time of this song was amazing. For an entire year you got to say you were 18 and a beauty queen. "Girls do what they want," was a really great line for your AIM profile, just before you listed your best friends by initial. I still sing this song at the top of my lungs driving around in my car. That's just the way things are, and the way they'll always be.
14. "Curse of Curves" by Cute Is What We Aim For (2006)
"I've got the gift of one liners" is right. This song has so many witty lines that it's honestly hard to choose just a couple. When you broke up with your boyfriend/girlfriend and needed to update your MySpace status, saying you wanted someone "provocative and talkative, but it's so hard when you're as shallow as a shower". Ooh, burn. This song had you forever questioning if your bone structure screamed, "touch her, touch her!".
15. "Crushcrushcrush" by Paramore (2007)
Paramore always came out with such great songs it was honestly hard to just choose one. But "Crushcrushcrush" made the list because I still get the same feelings when it comes on as I did back in 2007. You sang this song about your crush, about you wanting to be more than what you were. You knew you would be perfect together, why couldn't they see that too? Also, let's not pretend that you didn't tape over your mouth and scribble on it, and pose for a new MySpace pic. And if you say that you didn't do that, then you're a liar. This song definitely gave me something to sing about.
