I've reached the point in my life where I rarely listen to popular mainstream music. I almost exclusively listen to songs from musicals. I like the storytelling aspect attached to songs that progress a plot. I've come to find there is a showtune for every mood or occasion. Here's a list I've complied so you always have a song ready for every moment in life.
1. When you're about to go to a lit party
"Big Fun" - Heathers the Musical
"Halloween" - Be More Chill
2. When you just got back from the world's best first date and you think you might have caught the feels
"Helpless" - Hamilton
"I Love the Way" - Something Rotten
3. When you like someone but they don't like you back
"I'm Not That Girl" - Wicked
"On My Own" - Les Misearbles
4. Or you're not sure if they like you
"Mix Tape" - Avenue Q
5. Or you don't even know if you want a relationship
"Being Alive" - Company
6. When you're thinking about how much you appreciate your BFF
"Two-Player Game" - Be More Chill
7. Or when you and your bestie are beefin'
"I'd Rather Be Me" - Mean Girls
8. When you want to feel like a boss ass bitch
"Dead Girl Walking" - Heathers the Musical
9. When you feel like sobbing
"Falling Slowly" - Once
"Finale" - Phantom of The Opera
10. Right before you loose your virginity
"Baptize Me" -The Book of Mormon
11. And right after
"Changing My Major" - Fun Home
(Mostly kidding about those last two, but they are great songs.)
There's never a wrong time for musical theatre. There truly is a song for every occasions, far too many too list here, but hopefully this is a good start.
