There’s a ton of great Christian music out there. Even though I’ve been religious my whole life, I didn’t start listening to some of the more mainstream Christian artists until just last year. Whether you’ve clung to that one band your whole life or never listened to Christian music much and are looking for a place to start, there’s something for everyone on this list. Take a look at these 15 songs that you definitely need for your Christian music starter pack.

1. "Lights Shine Bright" - TobyMac ft. Hollyn

This song has a great feel to it. If you enjoy heavy bass, you’ll really like this one. It’s also a decent mix between a “feel good” song and a “worship” song. Every other line doesn’t overtly mention God, but the praise of His Glory is definitely still in there.

2. "In Christ Alone" - Travis Cottrel

You actually might have heard this in church. This version still sounds pretty hymn-like (it even features a choir!), but it also has a more modernized vibe to it. It’s that kind of song that starts quiet and gets louder and louder as it goes on.

3. "Good Good Father" - Chris Tomlin

This wouldn’t be a Christian music starter pack if I didn’t include “Good Good Father.” This is a staple. The melody and words are also pretty easy to catch on to, so if you happen to hear it during church service or during a worship session, you’ll pick it up no problem.

4. "You Raise Me Up" - Josh Groban

This one is another goodie, and it’s been around for several years now, so it’s basically considered a Christian throwback. It has the same feeling as Travis Cottrel’s “In Christ Alone.”

5. "Stars" - Skillet

Skillet was that one Christian band that I clung to for years, and to this day, they’re still my favorite band. At the risk of going on and on about it, I’ll just stop at saying that this is just one of many of their songs that glorify God and sound beautiful while doing so. In fact, if you’ve seen the movie “The Shack,” you’ve already heard this song. I recommend listening to it again, several times.

6. "Write Your Story" - Francesca Battistelli

Plenty of Christian women produce beautiful praise and worship songs. Unlike Josh Groban and Travis Cottrel, who are very hymn-like; or Skillet, who is normally considered rock; Francesca Battistelli’s music is typically very upbeat. “Write Your Story” puts you in a good mood while also getting you to think about our Creator.

7. "Oh the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus" - Audrey Assad ft. Fernando Ortega

I have no words for this song other than it is beautiful. It does so much even though it is so minimal in production, utilizing only two voices and a couple of instruments.

8. "We Believe" - Newsboys

Have you really ever listened to Christian music if you’ve never heard “We Believe” by Newsboys? Even if you think you’ve never heard this song, you probably have. In church. On the radio. During youth group. Better put it on repeat to familiarize yourself with it some more.

9. "Your Grace is Enough" - Chris Tomlin

This guy is always on fire with his praise and worship songs. Just like “Good Good Father,” “Your Grace is Enough” is one of those songs that’s catchy and easy to learn (and probably one of the more popular songs for those reasons).

10. "American Noise" - Skillet

It’s definitely not their most well-known song, but it still sounds great and sends a wonderful message without being overtly religious. It brings up the theme of giving love to repair a broken world – and isn’t that what Christians are called to do?

11. "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" - BYU Noteworthy

Everyone knows “Amazing Grace,” but have you heard an acapella version? These women from Brigham Young University absolutely kill it with their covers of traditional worship hymns, and their rendition of “Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone)” is no exception.

12. "My Lighthouse" - Rend Collective

Honestly, pretty much every song by Rend Collective is good, and their pieces get even better when you watch the creative, fun music videos that go with them. While of course, I’d recommend all of Rend Collective’s songs, I’d start with this one. There’s just something about it.

13. "Lord, I Need You" - Matt Maher

I swear I have known this song my entire life, but I only recently found out that Matt Maher whipped this gem out just a few years ago. This song is probably ingrained in every Christian at conception. Don’t believe me? Listen to this song. Familiar, isn’t it? In all seriousness though, it really is a great song.

14. "Greater" - Mercy Me

When I first heard this song, I was immediately drawn in by how catchy it is. Listen closely to the lyrics; the message is still great. It does a good job of praising God while still giving the listener a pick-me-up if they’re feeling down. Remember, God is great and He worked so hard to create you. You are enough because He says you are.

15. "Alone" - Hollyn ft. TRU

Many popular Christian songs will feature the singer easily give him/herself into God’s will. It sounds so easy to listen to God when you hear these songs, but the reality is, we all stumble and fall every single day. This song portrays that. It bluntly states that we can all be “little punk[s] sometimes” and even begs God to not leave us alone. While of course, we know God never deserts us, this is still a real fear that still crosses our minds, and this song just comes out and says it. It’s got a great beat, too.

Almost every Christian song I’ve come across is great, but this list is a pretty good place to start if you’re not sure where to go first. I encourage you to just pick any one of these songs and let autoplay run on YouTube. Go down the rabbit hole. You’ll be glad you did.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
