15 Signs You're From Utica, NY

Utica is a small city located in the heart of Central New York. Usually when people hear "Utica", they respond with "Weren't you guys referenced on that TV show?" or "Isn't Utica really ghetto?". 1. Yes, we've been referenced on "The Office" and "Orange is the New Black" (Go Utica!). 2. Yes, some parts can be quite ghetto, but there are parts of Utica that can be truly beautiful! Utica is ranked as one of the most depressing cities in New York state, but like I said before, there are some great qualities that make up Utica. As much as I'm that person that says "Oh my gosh, I need to get out of Utica!!", I am proud to be from Utica.

Here are 15 signs that determine you're from Utica, New York.

1. You love half-moons from Holland Farms, and you refuse to eat any other half moon.

2. When someone does not know what Tomato Pie is, your face looks like this...

3. The Boilermaker is basically a national holiday in Utica. I don't run in the Boilermaker, but it's always aired on TV to watch! If you don't know what the Boilermaker is, it is a huge race that happens every year in July in Utica.

4. When traveling down Oriskany Blvd around 9pm, and you have to wait at a red light for a good 10 minutes, you immediately realize "Oh....there was a Comets game/Utica College game tonight."

5. If you've never been to a Utica Comets game, do you even live in Utica?

6. Honestly, if you've never been to any event at the Utica Auditorium (Concerts, Shrine Circus), do you even live in Utica?

7. Being a theater lover, I'm thankful that Utica can provide Broadway performances in our beautiful Stanley Theater!

8. When traveling somewhere other than Utica, you avoid potholes like it is your job!

9. Living in Rochester currently, I wish Voss' was a franchise.

10. When going to Sangertown mall, expect to run into at least three people you know. It's even worse when you come home from college, and you run into those people from high school that you would rather not talk to...

11. You've been to the Utica Zoo, Fort Rickey, or Water Safari at least once in your life.

12. You've definitely have celebrated a special occasion either at Delmonico's, Cavallo's, or Ocean Blue.

13. In the summertime, you get ice cream from Nicky Doodles or Tasty Treat almost every other day.

14. When you're watching a TV show, and they all of a sudden make a reference about Utica, your reaction looks like this...

15. If people do not know where Utica is, you most likely explain it to them as "It's right between Syracuse and Albany".

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that.
