15 Signs You're From Bloomington-Normal

Even though I couldn't hardly stand the place when I lived there I have realized since going to an out of state school it's not that bad. There are many things about the town people love and hate but you're going to find that everywhere. There's no place like Blo/No!

1. Your parents work for State Farm.

The company’s headquarters are located in downtown Bloomington, bringing thousands of people to central Illinois.

2. You refuse to go to Illinois State University.

Yes, it’s a great school. But you grew up going to school right down the street from it. You were ready for a change... unless you had a scholarship to play a sport.

3. More than likely you already have plans to move back.

It’s a place that you have to move away from to appreciate.

4. Driving on Veteran’s Parkway is your worst nightmare.

Always busy and everyone goes 60 when the speed limit is 45.

5. All of your social gatherings are around food.

Bloomington/Normal has the most restaurants per capita in the country. We are also home to the largest Dairy Queen in the country! (Yes, we're proud)

6. There’s always job openings.

Because Bloomington/Normal is home to many universities and big named companies the economy hasn’t affected our town.

7. If you were pulled over you prefer it be the Bloomington Police and not the Normal Police.

Normal cops don’t always have good attitudes.

8. Going to multiple high school dances is normal.

Because there are multiple high schools in town going to 2-3 dances in the span of 3 weeks was completely alright.

9. Every Friday night football game was an excuse to eat at Steak n’ Shake.

It was like sitting in the school cafeteria.

10. You cringe if someone asks if you are a suburb of Chicago.

We are 2 hours away, don’t think that counts as a suburb.

11. It’s a big town with a small town vibe.

Everyone knows everyone and everything.

12. It’s a melting spot of sports fans.

Because the town is centrally located we have Cubs fans, Cardinals fans, Blackhawks fans, Blues fans, and Pacers fans.

13. Drive your tractor to school day is a celebrated holiday.

Some loved it, most hated it. Only because there was no parking.

14. Eastland mall is subpar.

We have Ulta and Old Navy at least?

15. There is nothing to do on weekends in high school except for the movies.

At least that’s what you told your parents you were doing.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
