When I tell people that my graduating class was less than 60 kids I get some very strange looks. Some kids just don't understand what it's like in a small high school. So here is my shout out to everyone that does know what it's like!!
1. You know the name of EVERYONE you pass in the hallway.
That was just the way it was. You knew everyone in your class and everyone in every other class. Chances are if you didn't know someone, you'd probably know them by the end of the year.
2. You know every teacher's first name.
It was inevitable, and a big part of graduation was being allowed to call teachers by their first name afterward.
3. There were always enough parking spaces for everyone in the school's one parking lot.
There were more than enough parking spots, but everyone still had their spot, and would get mad when anyone else parked there.
4. The whole school knew about everything by the start of next period.
Both a blessing and a curse, if a couple broke up between classes, everyone knew. If someone went home sick, everyone knew. Everyone pretty much knew everything.
5. You are known by your older siblings and/or family members.
While I'm the oldest sibling in my family, I can only imagine the joy my little sophomore sister gets when people refer to her as 'Ally's little sister'
6. Everyone had their names and awards read at graduation and the ceremony was still over in less than two hours.
It's true. We had time to read off everyone's name, had both of our valedictorians give speeches, have our choir and band perform, and more. We were still done in less than two hours. *insert my whole graduating class throwing our caps here*
7. Every group of friends had a table they sat at for lunch all year, sometimes even all four years.
Everyone had their table and that was that. Don't even think about sitting at someone else's table.
8. Rumors spread like wildfire.
When something happened, everyone knew about it in a matter of hours. There were no secrets. If you didn't want the rest of your school to find out, don't do it.
9. The dating pool was small, very small.
Most kids wouldn't even date within the school because it was so small. Some would have success and some wouldn't, but every school has that couple that starts dating in their freshman or sophomore year and is still together now. *insert photo of my best friend and her boyfriend of three years at prom here*
10. When people ask where your high school is, you have to think of the nearest bigger town because people have never heard of it before.
With my high school being so small most people haven't even heard of it, so I'll just say its near *insert larger school from larger town here* and they'll get the point
11. 99% of the school participate in a sport or some other after school activity.
Sports were huge in my school, most kids played two or three sports. Keeping them busy all year long. One of the best feelings ever is coming back to school the day after your team wins and the whole school celebrating! *insert photo of my schools baseball team winning the state tournament here*
12. Everyone knew who was dating who, so there was no confusion about it.
There was no confusion on this subject.
13. If you got into trouble at school, chances are your parents knew about it even before you got home.
Be it a call from a teacher who is their friend, or a quick email. Your parents knew everything the second they walked in the door.
14. You probably told yourself "I hate this place, I can't wait to get out of here" several times a week.
I know I told myself that at least once a day, but I really did love it there, and I miss it every day.
15. You couldn't imagine high school any other way.
I loved my friends and all my teachers with all my heart. My school may have been small, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
